I was required to read this book for a class, and went in not sure about the subject matter. Upon reading it, I found myself laughing a lot of the time. It's a smart, witty book that bends the way you see your world. It also has an amount of mathematical theory in it, but it's easily explained within the book. I found it to be entertaining and educational. For anyone looking for an easy, smart laugh this the book for you. It's short, too, so it won't take very long to read--the chapters are small for reading in quick spurts.
Summary of Flatland (Illustrated Edition)
Flatland, which is written under the pseudonym "a square", offers pointed observations on the social hierarchy of Victorian culture. Flatland's more enduring contribution is its examination of dimensions; in the words of noted writer Isaac Asimov, Flatland is "the best introduction one can find into the manner of perceiving dimensions." As such, Flatland is still popular among mathematics, physics and computer science students.Flatland is one of the very few novels about math and philosophy that can appeal to almost any layperson. Published in 1880, this short fantasy takes us to a completely flat world of two physical dimensions where all the inhabitants are geometric shapes, and who think the planar world of length and width that they know is all there is. But one inhabitant discovers the existence of a third physical dimension, enabling him to finally grasp the concept of a fourth dimension. Watching our Flatland narrator, we begin to get an idea of the limitations of our own assumptions about reality, and we start to learn how to think about the confusing problem of higher dimensions. The book is also quite a funny satire on society and class distinctions of Victorian England.
