Book Review: Good motivational tool which made me re-think my fitness program

I purchased this book not too long ago and I must say that I find the author's no-nonsense approach to weight loss and fitness very intelligent and motivating.

Mr. Karas succinctly dismisses all types of fad diets and myths about diet and exercise (i.e. "Carbs make you fat", "Eating after 7pm causes weight gain"). His simple approach to food/weight loss - you're not losing weight because you are eating too many calories for your activity level/age - is unpopular but nevertheless is fact. If you are burning 1700 calories a day and your intake is 2400, you'll gain weight, whether those calories are from Oreos or grilled chicken breast. It is far easier to consume too many Oreos than too much chicken breast - and he rightly points out that this is where the problem lies. I found this just the reality check I needed. He denounces all fad diets and instead promotes sensible eating habits that can be maintained for life. All good advice.

Because of his advice in this book and "The Cardio-Free Diet", he tends to come across as someone who is anti-cardio. Speaking as a serious runner, this irked me a bit, until I realized that his objection is not to cardio itself, but to using cardio as an excuse to eat, which happens all too frequently. I've certainly done that! He's right - it IS tempting to think that you can eat that (second) doughnut because you just ran 5 miles. That's how I gained weight training for a half marathon!

His emphasis on strength training is very valid. Muscle loss with age is an unfortunate fact of life, and people - especially those older than 35 - who weight train and are also lean have stronger, shapelier bodies than those who are merely thin. Now that I am in my 40s, I realize that the key to maintaining my shape (and my bones, and my metabolism) lies in more muscle, not more miles on the treadmill or on the road.

I won't give up running because of this book, because I love the sport of running. However, I won't use it as an excuse for over-eating, either, or think that just being thin enough to fit into my skinny jeans represents overall fitness. His book was enough to get me off my cardio-bunny duff and into the weight room, with accompanying results.

Overall, a very motivating read and a message I needed to hear.
