Book Reviews of Foods That HealBook Review: A Health Food Encyclopedia Summary: 5 Stars
This is an excellent little book. This book offers "foods that heal" and interesting health/food subjects, as well, as a myriad of helpful food factoids and tips to assist the reader on the road to wellness.
Dr. Jensen not only goes into depth about each of the foods he has chosen as the ones that heal, offering a ton of history for each and how each food can best be used, but he also quickly built a foundation about the very basic physiological needs of the body. From there, Dr. Jensen discusses the most common mineral deficiencies in humans and which foods are rich in them.
Among his many helpful offerings, Dr. Jensen provides a small list of common disorders and juice recipe cocktails that can help the conditions. He also has a chart of the 12 major body systems, which vitamins and minerals they require, and from which foods and herbs you can get them from. ANOTHER chart he offers is what he calls a "food remedy troubleshooting chart" which is basically just a quick overview of what is to come. It's a list of all the "chosen" foods, which chemical elements are most prominent, and what the foods are best FOR.
Dr. Jensen also quickly touches upon his food philosophy and beliefs and his suggestions for diet, such as eating 60% raw, 80% alkaline foods, etc.
Overall, this is just an excellent book, chock full of information. There's no way anyone could lose out from owning this awesome book. There is just so much offered here, I can't imagine ANYONE not being satisfied with it.
And just something worth noting, all of the foods in the book, with the exception of two items (lima beans and lentils), are either a fruit or vegetable. And while that is the case, he does mention some other foods that he believes to be wonderful in their healing and nutritive properties.
Book Review: Dangerous Information, Good Recipes Summary: 2 Stars
Why don't more people take the time to fact check things before believing everything they read? Much of this information is outdated, and some of it is patently false and even dangerous. Yes, pennyroyal is a warming herb, it also can cause abortions. I have never heard of a patient cured of cancer by eating only whole grapes. Olives, hate to say, are NOT the highest source of potassium... and pickled olives are very high in sodium. According to "Natural Standard" (an association for integrative medicine) combinations of lactobacillus and chlorophyll have been known to cause nausea and diarrhea in patients. Avocado oil, even concentrated, does NOT have a negative effect on the liver, not even in the high doses given to lab rats. In fact, the only noticeable effect in the lab rats was a lowering of their triglycerides. Sesame seeds actually have slightly more calories than sunflower seeds (in the book he states that sesame seeds are the king of seeds and will not 'put weight on you').
The only reason I gave this book a second star was due to the varied and interesting recipes included. Yes, it is important to have a varied diet, and that alone will improve your health. So I guess anything which encourages a person to try new foods in new ways can't be 100% awful, but this book came close.
Book Review: Amazing Book Summary: 5 Stars
This is a terrific book. I especially love the information about what vitamins you will find in specific fruits and vegetables.
If you want to know specifics about how what you eat can help your health, this book is perfect. It is one of the best health books I have read (I have read several)!
I cannot recommend this book highly enough. You will be glad you bought this book.
Another book I recommend for tracking your health history and discovering a cure for what ails you is: Health History for: Your Personal Health Record
This book will let you record your health history and any vitamins, herbs, oils or food you are using to help you get better. It is also good for those who are not sick. It allows you to keep all your health records in one place. You will no longer be wondering, "Now what did the doctor say?" or "What time did I take that medicine/vitamin?"
It is perfect for anyone whether you use natural treatments or primarily do what the doctor tells you to do. Your health history is your key to getting and staying well.
Book Review: History of Healing Foods that Still Work Wonders+ Summary: 5 Stars
This is still effective reading on the therapeutic uses of fruits and vegetables. The book was published some twenty years ago,and has the mind-set of the natural food craze of the late 20th century. The nutrient information is still useable and the one hundred plus delicious recipes are still tasty sounding. There are more volumnous health books around, that have more complete information on nutrition listings. What i liked most about the book is that of the little known history about the natural foods. And how they came into our Western foodbaskets. This book is not a great encyclopedia on organic foods and advanced meal recipes.Yet,there are many interesting buyer suggestions that can be used to improve your daily diet. This food book should be used as a helpful guide to making smart choices concerning disease-fighting foods and replacing processed foods from your menu.
