Book Reviews of For a Few Demons More (The Hollows, Book 5)

Book Review: Average
Summary: 2 Stars

This book is a slight redemption over the last one which is horribly written. However, I'm almost giving up on this series. It started out quite promising, but slowly, the melodramatic Rachel wears on my nerves as I complete more books in this series.

The story in this novel starts with some bodies of Were, being discovered, and Rachel was called in to investigate. Or so it seems. Throughout the next chapters, she didn't really do much investigating, as agonizing over her own problems - as usual, demons/ivy. Eventually, she didn't so much as discover the truth, but rather the murderer directly tell her he did it. So in terms of building up the tension to the main story plot - there is none. It just meanders along until the truth hits her in the head.

I have to say also my bias is that I dislike Rachel - the lead character. She has power but doesn't seem to be strong - instead relying on others to rescue her. She is supposed to be a sort ofpolice (runner) but yet doesn't seem to follow the law that you need proof to arrest someone (in all the books, she always goes "Trent is the bad guy! Arrest him!!" while the male characters resignedly reminds her "you need proof"). As a investigator, she doesn't do much investigating.

So all in all, not a great book.

Book Review: Losing it, losing me
Summary: 3 Stars

I have to agree with a previous review--there comes a point in every series when the author loses it and loses me. I have avidly awaited (and enjoyed) each of the books in this series. But I'm in the middle of this one and I'm not sure I can finish it--it's just not holding my attention. And I never thought I would say that about this series!

So many things happen in the plot line that I just don't understand--I'm NOT an expert in Harrison's ley line magic and demons. And I don't always understand Rachel's actions and reactions. It would be nice if there was a bit more explanation, and a bit less of Rachel being attracted to EVERY male she comes in contact with. And, sorry, I'm all for gay rights but if I wanted to read about lesbian interactions, I'd read lesbian lit.

I'm not "post modernist"--I don't like to have to think about everything and figure it out for myself. I just want to read a good plot line with interesting characters and be entertained, for Pete's sake!

And, unfortunately, I paid hardcover price for this book.

Book Review: Disappointing
Summary: 3 Stars

I only discovered this series a month ago, and at first I was very impressed. The first three books were excellent, well plotted, descriptive, an imaginative new universe, I was pleased to find a new series that I liked (after the Anita Blake series went completely down the toilet). I have been reading them back to back. I was surprised to find book four moving out of the Cincinnati environment, and I began to feel that Ms Harrison was losing control of her plot (why was Ivy waiting on the dock? why did Rachel insist on being in the truck with Peter when we never hear from him again?), but still, there was some good character development (I love Jenks). Book 5 started well, but then went completely down hill. The plot almost doesn't make sense, several characters are reduced to cardboard walk-ons, and there are several jarring editing errors. Rachel is not even behaving consistently any more, and by the end of the book I was really starting to lose interest in this series. I will try book 6, but if it is the same then I think that's it for me.

Book Review: Heartbroken
Summary: 3 Stars

If you haven't read this book yet...DO NOT READ THIS REVIEW!! SPOILER!!

The loss of Kisten devastated me. I know, get over it already it is a fictional character and my emotions are the result of good writing. I am not normally one to be attached to fictional characters, well not since Angel and Buffy but I was in high school and Joss Whedon is awesome, go figure.

Kim Harrison, if you happen to read this, I LOVE the relationships you have written in to this series and I often find myself laughing out loud while reading their interactions. This is why I was taken so far aback by the lack of exploration into Rachel, Ivy and Kisten's relationship. They could have been one seriously interesting poly-dynamic. No, I am not reading your books with my hormones but crappy things are always happening to Rachel and Ivy and Kisten. I just felt that they deserved better. Also, on a more embarrassing note, I cried at my desk while reading the heartache of Kitsens death. I felt a great loss.

Book Review: Doest disapoint
Summary: 4 Stars

I have read this series from the first book "dead witch walking" And loved it ever since. Was so happy to find the remaining books on amazon. This book arrived on time and was in the condition described. Now on to the text of the book.

If you thought the other books had drama and suspense, wait till you pick up For a Few Demons More. It has suspense, comedy, sorrow, joy and more sadness. I will have to say the ending was hard for me since I had followed the book from the beginning (THIS MAY BE A SMALL SPOILER) A main and lovable character will be gone in the end and I have to say it put tears in my eyes. Besides that A lot happens that will flip the world of the hollows upside down. Also in the end Kim adds a small story for the loved one we lost to let us know a little more about that person. So With out giving too much away I say this is a must read if you have been following the series or not. Can't wait to purchase the next issue and see where the hollows goes.
