Book Reviews of Force of Nature (Troubleshooters, Book 11)Book Review: Well worth waiting for! Summary: 5 Stars
I've been waiting for this book ever since Hot Target, when Jules Cassidy, the often-flamboyant but always efficient FBI agent met in-the-closet actor Robin Chadwick. For a long time, Jules has been longing for the life that his friends have, first Alyssa and Sam and later Max and Gina. He wants a relationship with a man he loves and who loves him, openly and without hesitation. He wants to have someone to come home to, and someone whose eyes light up when they see him. He wants to be loved - and he doesn't want to conduct his relationship in the closet.
Jules fell hard for actor Robin Chadwick in Hot Target. But Robin was all wrong for him for so many reasons: he's an alcoholic, a womaniser and so far in the closet he can see the back wall. Robin's in denial about his sexuality - and yet, a huge slap in the face for Jules, he slept with Jules' ex Adam. Ever since, Jules has been trying to forget him. He even started a relationship with Ben, a Marine - but that's slated for disaster as well, since Ben's career military and can't even go on a date with Jules without bringing his (female) flatmate as a beard.
Now, on an investigation in Florida, Jules runs into Robin again, and due to circumstances has absolutely no choice but to involve him in the FBI investigation into a possible terrorist plot. It's hell on earth for Jules, but he has no choice but to act professionally and get on with the job, even while Robin's trying his best to seduce him while still refusing to come out of the closet. Add in more drunken binges and some explicit and very damaging video that ends up on YouTube, and it's even more obvious that Robin is so very wrong for Jules... or is he?
I loved this book. It's the first mainstream romance novel I've read where the author had the courage to include a gay romance as a main part of the storyline, and didn't compromise in any way in telling the story (well, okay, the sex wasn't explicit in the same way as her het scenes are, but you can't have it all, I suppose). Oh, yeah, there was a het romance as well, but Annie and Ric just faded into the background for me, as anyone would have with Robin and Jules around.
Robin and Jules are my favourite characters in the Troubleshooters series (I really don't get the Sam and Alyssa love; they're far from my favourites) and this book did not disappoint at all. I'm looking forward to appearances from these two in future Brockmann novels.
Summary of Force of Nature (Troubleshooters, Book 11)Hard-driving suspense and intense passion are the hallmarks of bestselling author Suzanne Brockmann?s pulse-pounding thrillers. In her tales of daring, danger, courage, and desire, men and women of action fight fiercely, love deeply, and time after time raise the bar for adventure to new heights. Brockmann?s latest novel is no exception.
Florida private investigator and ex-cop Ric Alvarado?s life is spiraling out of control. His beautiful new girl Friday, Annie Dugan, is far more interested in fieldwork than filing, and despite Ric?s best efforts to ignore the attraction, sparks are flying between them. Then one of Ric?s clients turns femme fatale and tries to gun down an innocent man. Thanks to quick thinking and even quicker reflexes, Ric comes to the rescue, only to learn he?s done a very good deed for some very bad people.
Suddenly Ric finds himself deep undercover with Annie, working for notorious crime boss Gordon Burns. One mistake from Ric?s painfully inexperienced partner and they?re both dead.
FBI agent Jules Cassidy?s life isn?t in much better shape. For years the FBI has been trying to prove Gordon Burns?s ties to terrorist activity. Now, thanks to Ric and Annie, Jules has found a way into the lion?s den. But in the course of his investigation he comes face-to-face with Robin Chadwick, the charismatic but self-destructive and closeted movie star for whom Jules feels a powerful attraction. Robin?s in town promoting his latest film?and Gordon Burns is a star-struck movie buff.
With Robin and Jules?s help, Ric and Annie are soon entrenched in Burns?s organization, surrounded by killers who may already have executed an FBI infiltrator. Before long the couple realizes that many more lives besides their own will be at stake if they make a false move. As the heat between them reaches dangerous levels, so do the risks they?re willing to take?in the line of duty, for the sake of loyalty, and in the name of something that runs even deeper.
