I am a forensic artist and police officer in south Texas. I first read Karen's book at the FBI academy in Quantico, Va. I absolutely loved the book and use it on a regular basis. I am continually refering to one chapter or another. Karen is extremely knowledgeable and well written. The book will guide everyone through all parts of forensic art from a beginner to a seasoned veteran. This book has something for everybody. Top notch work! Not only does this book encompass history, issues, and techniques regarding composite sketches, but it also introduces the artist to the important concepts and techniques used in post-mortem drawings, two-dimensional, and three-dimensional skull reconstructions. You'll be taken step by step through these processes and given professional advise as to determining the best way to approach unique situations. I am a 26 year old, visual artist. I bought this book because I was interested in seeing if I could create a digital, non-evasive forensic methodology. After reading through this book, I was able to develop a digital technique and create a photo-realistic forensic illustration!This book is very practical. It actually walks you through the steps necessary to create finished images. After having read this book, you should be able to start making images and helping identify people!
The book is well researched, has excellent footnotes, references, color photos, techniques on 2d & 3d illustrations and great information on forensic sciences.
It is well worth the money.

Over the years, I have read many text books. This is by far the most completely and directly written material. It moves the reader through the different topics with a logic that makes this book incredably easy to read and understand, even though the material is complex. The author explains that the art of sketching is important. But she also explains that the information gathering process is the key to this work. She guides the reader into understanding the emotional condition of the victim or witness who has experienced the trauma of the situation. Getting the right information from these individuals in an understandable way is the real art.Book Review: Hands Down -- the Best! Packed with 10 Golden Stars!

I am a student of forensic art and criminalistics, but I have been an artist for over 27 years -- This book is the prize of my collection, and that is saying a LOT. The human face is a very complex subject, and this book covers it ALL!Speaking on the art aspect alone, you will be educated on tools, styles, proportions, facial anatomy from the bone to the epidermis, the differences between male/female and racial/ancestral groups, hair and textures, and other references.
As for the forensic end of the spectrum, it not only covers the history and composition techniques, but it also touches on communicating with victims and memory enhancement for interviewing, courtroom etiquette and procedures, dealing with the media, post-mortem reanimation, and age progression for both aging and growth.
This book dominates the arena.
I have, in no way, mentioned all of the topics and information in this book. You will have to look at the sample pages here at Amazon to get a better grasp of what it holds. Then, you should buy this book to understand what all of the rage is about!...
Karen Taylor is the best in this field and she has collaborated a book as important and incredible as all of her contributions to criminal justice. I highly recommend this book to everyone with an interest art, composition, forensics, and justice for victims.
