Book Review: You have GOT to be kidding me...

This book was terrible.
It was a romantic comedy that wasn't funny, with scenes that skipped like a broken record. (Literally, the romantic subplot was the girl going no-no-no, and the guy going yes-yes-yes for seven chapters until they suddenly decide to have sex for the first time...out of nowhere). The mystery subplot was an afterthought, and was only resolved (halfway through the very last chapter of the book) deus-ex-machina style by the perpetrator coming into the scene and confessing everything.
If this is what I can expect from Janet Evanovich, I'll do my level best to avoid her books as though they were radioactive. In fact, I'd like to plead with Amazon, Borders and Barnes and Noble to move Foul Play away from all the other books for fear of intellectual contamination.
In truth, I think I have a handle on what she was trying to do. She wanted to give us a 40s style romance with whipsmart dialouge, and Rated-G sex. Problem is instead of The Thin Man, she gave us the single worst episode of Moonlighting...ever.
Summary of Foul Play
When Amy Klasse loses her TV job to a dancing chicken, handsome veterinarian Jake Elliott rescues her with an offer to be his receptionist. Jake just can't resist a damsel in distress, and Amy certainly doesn't mind Jake's charming sincerity.
Then suddenly the job-stealing chicken disappears and Amy is suspected of foul play. Amy and Jake search for clues to prove her innocence. But will Jake be able to prove to Amy that love, too, is a mystery worth solving?
