Book Review: I dare you to put this book down...
Summary: 4 Stars
The prologue of Fractured may be the most exciting prologue that I have ever read. It grabs the reader and makes is impossible not to read on. It is, in a word, brilliant. Slaughter has gifts as a crime writer that put her in the elite of her field. The major problem is that she also has gifts as a Romance novelist that would likely put her in the elite of that field. How do I continue this review without sounding too sexist? Actually sexism be damned, I cannot continue my criticisms of this excellent crime novel without sounding so. When Slaughter gets down to describing the atmosphere in the Atlanta PD station, the reader is transported to the world of a high school boys gym. That may be Slaughter's intent, and we all know that there is a good deal of testosterone flowing in that department of local government, but Slaughter just overdoes that whole aspect. When there is romance in the air images of Fabio almost come to mind in her descriptions of how the female protaginist Faith Mitchell reacts to the touches and glances of Victor Martinez, the object of her affection. Those sections of the book really bothered me. They took a very creative plot with several great twists and turns down to the level of a cheap romance novel at times. Thankfully these were not huge sections of the book, but it did deter me from giving "Fractured" a five star rating. Will Trent, the male protaginist, is a fascinating character whose dyslexic mind is used to advantage by seeing facts from a less than normal angle. It makes for a great read, and Faith and Will are a team that I expect will have a long series of novels ahead. I plan to read more of Slaughter's work though in perusing Amazon it seems this is certainly her most succesful effort to date.
