Book Reviews of Fractured

Book Review: Gives you more to think about than your usual suspense novel
Summary: 5 Stars

I really loved Triptych when I read it, but it took me some time to warm up to Fractured. Will Trent is a very unconventional main character -- after all, he's a GBI investigator that can't read. He's awkward, socially inept, and at times, easily flustered. I tend to waffle back and forth in my belief of the scenario but by the time I get to the end, I have to admit that I feel for him. Slaughter takes his illiteracy and really makes it matter, as his dyslexia leads to him discovering some key facts later than he should. I'm glad she's decided to give him a partner and really test his comfort zone. I think it makes him more of a fully flushed-out character, and that's why I root for him in the end.

But enough about Will! The real mystery here, What Has Happened to Emma?, is a good one. Not only is this the story of a brutal kidnapping (or murder? or both?), but much like in Triptych, you're never completely sure who are the good guys and who are the bad. Also, Slaughter does a good job of telling a story about the foster care system, and how shared upbringings can have very different results. There is not yet a third book in this series, but I hope there will be.

Book Review: Slaughter has redeemed herself in my eyes.....
Summary: 4 Stars

After "Beyond Reach," I vowed never to read another Karin Slaughter book despite the fact that I had loved them ALL until that one.

A friend, Barbara, convinced me to try "Fractured" AND sent it to me, saying that it would change my mind. And it did. I had also enjoyed Triptych so figured I may as well see although I still don't understand the purpose of a prequel here.

The story line has been described by other reviewers. The important thing to convey about this book, other than that you should read it, is that the characters are so well contructed --they were fully developed people with normal human traits and flaws. I wanted to meet them! The mystery was good -- I always like them better when I can't figure out the culprits by chapter 3 -- and the police procedures descriptions were very interesting. Also liked the sidebar info about dyslexia (which is probably misunderstood and underdiagnosed). Amazing to find functional illiteracy at such high levels?!

I hope we see more of Will and Faith in subsequent books that I will not hesitate to read -- as long as there are no words like "Grant County" anywhere inside.....

Buy it!

Book Review: Brilliant beginning...
Summary: 3 Stars

...however as the story progresses it all gets a bit ploddy and I found myself losing interest as to whether the mystery is resolved or not.

Special Agent Will Trent and Detective Faith Mitchell are thrown together to unravel this case. Will features in 'Triptych' but in 'Fractured' Karin concentrates more on developing his character, more than one aspect of which is worked nicely in with the story. Both he and Faith are realistically written with interesting histories and mini plots of their own and and I liked their developing work relationship.

The message running through this novel is the importance of families and a feeling that you belong. Some characters having been denied a loving family, others not realising what they have until it's too late.

Whilst the momentum wasn't sustained throughout, it was still an enjoyable read and I'd definitely read the next novel featuring Will and Faith.

Book Review: Another fine book from Slaughter; with a possibly hidden message?
Summary: 4 Stars

In her second book featuring Will Trent of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Slaughter weaves a lean, taut tale that far surpasses the previous work featuring Trent -- Triptych -- and introduces a new character in Faith Mitchell; a tough, savvy, smart and aggressive cop who seems destined to continue into future works as Trent's partner.

Slaughter has a real talent for creating fully realized three-dimensional characters, with all the flaws and gifts that make each of them real and believable.

In this case, Trent's battle with dyslexia is explored in depth, and brings a new twist to the genre that is original and inventive, and used to great effect throughout.

It never occurred to me until I started writing this review, but Slaughter made an interesting decision in naming her characters, because in essence, this novel boils down to:

Can Will and Faith defeat Evil?

Book Review: Very suspenseful crime thriller
Summary: 5 Stars

This the second book in the Will Trent series and it just gets better. Will Trent is an agent with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI). In this story he takes over a kidnapping/murder case from the Atlanta police and in turn acquires a new partner, Detective Faith Mitchell with the Atlanta police department. Together they pursue a host of suspects to find the guilty parties. This is quite an interesting character study and a very suspenseful story line. It takes place in the city of Atlanta, not the fictional south Georgia town of Ms. Slaughter's other series. One of the best murder mysteries/police procedural books this year. Ms. Slaughter can really spin a good tale. Highly recommended.
