Book Reviews of Fresh: The Ultimate Live-Food Cookbook

Book Review: Skip this book! No photos, no instructions, no good.
Summary: 2 Stars

This book *may* be a good recipe book for someone who's very familiar with raw cuisine and has been following the lifestyle for a long time, but not for those who are intermediate/beginners.

I've been vegetarian over 20 years, so I've had a lot of raw food meals at many raw restaurants (and some prepared at home) but this book was not helpful for me at all. Each recipe has an ingredients list and a quick, SHORT paragraph on how to combine them. It's almost as if they took their index file and said "hey, let's make a book." Most of the recipes say "Blend and enjoy" or "Mix all ingredients, put on dehydrator sheets for 12 hours". What's worse, you have no idea how the actual meal should look when completed, as there are only 19 photos for the over 250 recipes.

The photos that were included are simple salads, chocolates and puddings, like we really need to see what the end result of our salad would be! This one is going back to the store, I held on to it for two weeks but it's useless. A much better choice is Jennifer Cornbleet's Raw Food Made Easy (for beginners only) or Matthew Kenney's Everyday Raw (great for dehydrator meals, and many other things).

Book Review: Not A Cookbook
Summary: 1 Stars

This book claims to be a cookbook however the book actually contains over fifty pages of why you should eat raw food and how amazing it will make your life. Even with the verbose and lengthy introduction, which should have been deleted the "recipes" basically consists of a list of ingredients and fails to provide adequate instructions aside from chop and mix. The few pictures in the book including that shown on the cover do not have detailed enough instructions to make the recipe look anything like the picture. Lastly some of the ingredients like dulse flakes and nutritional yeast which are in numerous recipes in this book are not described anywhere in the book nor can I find these ingredients anywhere, including the health food store. Rather than discuss all about blenders and food processors which, most people already have both try describing the recipes and ingredients in a little more detail. My recommendation is don't but this book if you want a cookbook, but only if you a few decent salad and dressing recipes and one man's account of the benefits of a raw diet. Wish I would have returned it.

Book Review: Fabulous book
Summary: 5 Stars

I have at least four other raw food cookbooks. The recipes in them always have a thousand ingredients and take forever to produce. I wind up not using them because of the exotic ingredients or the time it takes to make the food. Soaking, cutting, blending, juicing, dehydrating, all in one recipe usually!

This book uses simple, available ingredients and a minimum of time to prepare. I can usually prepare a dish from what's already in my house, which if you've used any other book, is usually impossible. Yes you might need to blend something and then dehydrate it, but you probably didn't have to soak it and juice it and hang it somewhere first.

The other thing I really like about the book is that if you use their recipes for salad dressings, for example, you are not just adding flavor, but you are also adding nutritional content. It's all very well thought-out. It's a lovely little book that I recommend to anyone who is interested in making simple, elegant raw food dishes that taste great.

Fresh: The Ultimate Live-Food Cookbook
I love this recipe book, I always wondered how to get more nuts and seeds into my family in a yummy way. I was happy to see they have nut/seed milk recipe's using 1-2 CUPS of them at a time!! The info and PICTURES of wild greens are awesome, and Vayla's information/tips about feeding children was great! Made a pizza recipe and it only lasted as long as it took us to eat it all!!! Sooooo goood!!! Good salads, good soup, all so good, and includes simple instructions for fermented foods too!!
Totally enjoying this book, the only improvement I can imagine is making it spiral bound for easier access when following the delicious recipes!

Book Review: Awesome Recipes!
Summary: 5 Stars

I just want to say that I absolutely LOVE this recipe book. It is definitely one of the BEST recipe books out there. My family and I have tried quite a few recipes from this book and have, so far, loved every single one.

The best thing about this book is that it's really great at giving ideas and giving inspiration to create your OWN recipes. My family has made quite a few recipes inspired by the ones in Victoria's book and every day we are making new things.

I want to thank Victoria Boutenko for her constant contribution to the raw lifestyle. THANK YOU! :)
