Book Reviews of Fresh Vegetable and Fruit JuicesBook Review: timeless 'nuggets' Summary: 4 Stars
At first once-over of the book, I was disappointed. And then I looked inward and realized that because I have a wide collection of books and have been reading, researching and collecting books for over thirty years, it is harder and harder for me to be truly delighted at a new one because by now..they're almost all the same. I've read it before..it's nothing new..
Ever wonder how many songs there are before every song has ever been written (or sung)? How many sermons can be preached before we run out of sermons?
And so I picked it up today..this rainy day, and asked to be 'renewed' and was glad to come away with some nuggets. After all, sometimes, it's not what you say, it's how you say it.
Because of his explanation of things, I have a greater appreciation for juicing than I had. I've always been a green smoothie person (which is a good thing), but I see now why I was not getting the results I was looking for. I was expecting the benefits of one from the other.
In comparing juicing and blending, it shouldn't be said that one is 'better' than the other. They are simply different; used differently, and with different benefits. And also, you shouldn't expect the same from each, as I had done. I love his explanation of both.
I also like that he says pesticides are in the fiber, which should be good news to those who juice but can't always get organic produce. I am still somewhat leary about that though - it would seem to me that pesticides would permeate everything. After all, if they can be found in the soil some 500 years later, why would the juice be exempt?
And then there's the myths about his age. Wikipedia seems to have the actual facts -correct birth year and year of his death, putting him at age 99.
I look forward to reading more of his books. His thinking will remain timeless.
Book Review: A real page turner Summary: 5 Stars
I have been juicing for about a month now but wanted to learn more about what I was really doing for my body and if I was making the optimal juice mixes for me.
Juicing provides me with a way to nourish the cells in my body and this book has taught me exactly what I wanted to know about juicing. What happens when I juice a vegetable or fruit on the atomic level? Why is it better to juice than eat whole or eat with pulp (as the Vita Mixer provides), how can I optimize my juices (triturate it!), what vegetables can be used to address a specific health concern, such as poor eyesight or arthritis.
I intend to follow another reviewer's advice and buy all of this man's books. They are fascinating to read. Although this one was written in the 1970's there is flavor in his writings of the 1800's and early 1900's. It isn't so heavy that his meaning is difficult to decipher but, for me anyway, it adds a nice ring to his words and a force to his convictions. Reading this book you get the idea that he really loved the world and cared deeply about people's health. He is very balanced in his writing too, staying away from endorsing one type of juicer over another or even coming down on the side of organics over commercially farmed.
If you are interested in learning about juices you won't go wrong by reading this one first...then worry about recipes, etc. Regardless of your choice you will enjoy a healthy life if you juice!
Book Review: Dr N. Walker, the REAL father of Juicing Summary: 5 Stars
"Fresh Vegetable and Fruit Juices" is the current abridged title for his original work from the mid=nineteen-thirties titled; "Raw Vegetable Juices:What's Missing In Your Body?"
This book is the cornerstone from which all subsequent books on juicing have built their texts. His clear explanation about what exactly is Juice Therapy and subsequent formulae designed for specific illnesses or condition are what make this THE exsential text to own for anyone who wishes to learn the correct understanding of tthe role of raw foods and esp. juices for the health of the body. No other text even comes close to the applied scientific approach given by Dr. Walker in his life's study and application of Raw Juice Therapy. His own life is the supremem example. Though his recommendations are extreme sounding for us: "Sell your stove and buy a juicer!", he lived a long life by practicing what he preached (some say well over 100 yrs old). I have used this book for 40 years to help myself a, family and friends. I have given away a dozen or more. Fascinating from first to last, THIS is THE book you MUST have if you are serious about juicing to help yourself and others. 'Nuff said!!!
Book Review: A life changing book for me Summary: 5 Stars
This book got it all started for me in my desire to eat mostly raw fruits and vegetables (especially the juices). Ten years ago as a first-year graduate student at UC Santa Barbara I found myself with an acne problem that had plagued me for the last 5 years, in addition to eyes that were beginning to tire easily. Then one day I stumbled upon this book by Dr. Walker which from the onset made complete sense to me. I bought a juiceman juicer the next week (and it hasn't failed me since!) and began a regimen of fresh juice three times a day. Some amazing things began to progess over the next year:! i) my acne not only completely disappeared, but I found myself having a very youthful, vibrant look. I looked better than I had ever in the past. ii) I lost 15 pounds in one year and became a star on the softball field. iii) I have not touched my reading glasses in the past 9 years. In the words of Jack Lalane (who is older and more fit than 99.99% of all other Americans) "If man made it, I don't eat it".
Book Review: A classic everyone should own Summary: 5 Stars
I'm into the health food movement like a lot of people nowdays. Unfortunately most books and programs don't cover all of the many ways to get and stay healthy. Although the above book listed is an excellent resource. It's like most authors and programs are trying to be too pc (politically correct). To correct myself a little, most health advice, programs, books and supplements usually offer pretty good advice these days. You know:
1. Don't alcohol
2. Don't abuse drugs
3. Don't smoke (cigaretts and the like)
4. Eat move live fresh fruits and vegetables.
5. Eat less process foods and meats.
Now all of this is good advice, although there is a right way and wrong way to do anything. I saw an excellent book with a good 8 step plan. Search Amazon for: The Magic Of Mother Nature's Healing Foods. I liked it.
