Book Reviews of Galaxy in Flames (Warhammer 40,000 Novels: Horus Heresy)Book Review: enjoyable, fast-moving military sf in Warhammer 40k universe Summary: 4 Stars
This is the first book by Ben Counter I have read.
He presents a good 3rd book in the Horus Heresy series (no longer a trilogy, given the pending publication of the flight of the eisenstein), and despite this being a case of the reader presumably knowing the general plot direction and the likely if not detailed fate of many of the characters invovled, he does a good job of telling a tale in which the reader remains involved and interested.
Despite its 400-page length, this book actually feels very quickly paced, and battle scenes compose a good chunk of the book as the various events in the Isstvaan system play out. I will note that the astartes much have been rock stupid not to realize that the unusual order of battle for the initial invasion of isstvaan III was for one very obvious reason.
This book was good enough that I will seek out some of this author's other work.
Book Review: The Best Warhammer 40,000 Book EVER Summary: 5 Stars
This book is an incredible book written by an incredible author, who has written some of my favorate books (The Grey Knights series) and has out done even these with "Galaxy in Flames". The book shows the Horus Heresy through a cast of well characterised people (Lucius, Sinderman, and Tarvits are my favorates). The action, storyline, and suspense have been layed out in a fashion that kept me reading wondering what would happen next, even though I have already learned about the Horus Heresy. The feeling you get when you read the parts where people die isn't "Ew, why did he put so much blood here!", it's "YEAH, GO LOKEN, KILL THAT STUPID TRAITOR!!!!!". Do not get me wrong though, this book is not just violence and mean bad guys, the story expertly brings this event to life with great story line and wonderful detail. I RECOMEND THIS BOOK TO EVERY LAST LIVING THING ON THE PLANET EARTH!
Book Review: Surpasses expectations Summary: 5 Stars
I have read all of the Horus Heresy books that have been released to this date, and this one is the best of the three. The book introduces several new characters and gives old characters new wrinkles to their personalities. The only criticism that I have of this book is that it does not explain how some of the primarchs that have sided with Horus come about making that choice. This might prove difficult to follow for newcomers to Warhammer 40K, but those familiar with the Warhammer 40K universe will be able to fill in the blanks just fine. The bar has been set pretty high for James Swallow to follow up with Flight of the Eisenstein. Hopefully his understanding of the 40K universe has improved since Deus Encarmine and Deus Sanguiness.
Book Review: Loyalist vs Traitors Summary: 5 Stars
So here it is, the first major battle of the Loyalist Space Marines and the traitorious Marines under Horus. The first half of the book focus' on the differences between those who are loyal to Horus and those who as still loyal to the Emperor. Horus gathers his primarch brother allies and their Legions to attack the Imperium. The second half is the glorious tale of the brave souls who would stand up and fight against the madness. The few who would speak out and stand against the path to Chaos were chased and attacked. The only problem that I found with it is that it ended. The battle scenes and character conflicts were absolutely amazing. I highly recommend this novel and can't wait until the rest of the series comes out.
Book Review: Simply Incredible! Summary: 5 Stars
After a long pause the voice returned. "Then you are welcome on my ship, Iacton Qruze.'
"And who are you?" asked Qruze.
"I am Captain Nathaniel Garro of the Eisenstein."
When you know the reference around this passage, it will send shivers through your spine, as it did mine. GALAXY IN FLAMES is the third book in a phenomenal series outlining the dreaded Horus Heresey.
I cannot praise these books enough, and am surprised to find it hasn't been adapted into a movie...the likes of which would challenge, even surpass STARWARS OR THE LORD of the RINGS!
