Book Reviews of Genghis: Lords of the Bow

Book Review: Second entry in Iggulden's Genghis trilogy is superb historical fiction
Summary: 5 Stars

This is the fist sequel to "Genghis: Birth of an Empire". Many readers expect these novels to be history. They are, in fact, historical fiction and Iggulden takes great liberties. as he is entitled to do, in inventing characters, dialog and to a certain extent, events. After all, there is relatively little concrete history for the era and locale. No one, for example, knows where or when Genghis Khan was born.

But never mind all that, because Iggulden brings Genghis to life. His uniting of the Mongol tribes, his innovative tactics Xi Xia kingdom rendering it a vassal state and then his campaign against the Empire of the Chin.

Iggulden covers a broad swath. Genghis's uneasy relationship with his youngest brother Temuge. His close collaboration with his other two brothers, Khasar and Kachiun. (Another brother, the eldest of the five, was murdered by Genghis and Khasar in the first book.) Genghis has his wife of many years and four children by her . . . when he takes a beautiful Xi Xia princess as a second wife.

Genghis lusts to conquer the Chin who for generations have played the Mongol tribes against each other and their other enemies. Having reduced Xi Xia to vassalage after the Chin Emperor refused to send aid, Genghis invades the northern Chin Empire.

Iggulden chronicles the many battles in brilliant detail. He depicts Genghis's skill at governing the many Mongol tribes he is hoping to weld into a nation. We follow the growth of his sons and their rivalries with each other and, in particular, the estrangement of the eldest son, Jochi, from his father and siblings.

The scope of the novel is broad: from the Chin Imperial Court with its new boy-emperor and calculating regent to the power hungry shaman who attaches himself to Genghis; from the frustration of besieging a city to the mechanics of feeding tens of thousands on the open plains.

This is historical fiction of the first order. As he does in his first novel of the trilogy, Iggulden provides an afterword describing many of the liberties he has taken and explains why.

If you enjoy historical fiction that rings with the clash of arms, the Genghis series is marvelous. Start with the first one - and prepare to be swallowed up. This is truly good stuff.

Summary of Genghis: Lords of the Bow

The #1 bestselling author Conn Iggulden, coauthor of the international sensation The Dangerous Book for Boys, delivers a masterful novel of the mighty Mongol conqueror?as Genghis Khan sets out to unify an entire continent under his rule. For centuries, Mongol tribes had warred with one another. But now, under Genghis Khan, they have united as one nation, setting their sights on a common enemy: the great, slumbering walled empire of the Chin. Genghis will lead his warriors across the Gobi Desert and into a realm his people had never seen before?with gleaming cities, soaring walls, and canals. Laying siege to one fortress after another, he will crush each enemy in a different way?until his army faces the ultimate test of all.

In the city of Yenking?modern-day Beijing?the Chin will make their final stand, setting a trap for the Mongol raiders, confident behind their towering walls. But Genghis will strike with breathtaking audacity, never ceasing until the Emperor himself is forced to kneel.
