Book Reviews of Gentle Rogue (Malory Novels)Book Review: Can't say this was a "swell-dandy-fine" read at all :/ Summary: 2 Stars
I got easily swayed by the +100 5 star reviews and decided to read this. Near the middle, towards the end of the book I was confused...So then I came back and read the lower star reviews. Suffice it to say that having read them and finished the book I dearly wanted to stop reading all of the sudden, this review feels quite at home with the other 2 star reviews.
I give it 2 stars for what really got me hooked in the beginning: Obviously the physical appeal of James Malory. "Big ape of a man": broad, heavily muscled, blond, green-eyed (my favorite eye color on a hero). Shallow of me but there you go. Next was the idea of his plan in seducing the unsuspecting Georgina Anderson in giving up the facade in the heat of passion, AFTER he makes life on the ship difficult for her. I actually squealed in excitement and astonishment at the ways he made her rife with "nausea," and made him for the first time ever endure sexual tension as she was a fresh challenge for him, being a devil-of-a-rake that he was. The lust was well-written, a prelude I thought to some passionate love...But that's when it all fell short for me. I feel like the author sold herself short and even the most transcendent thing of all-love- was sold short.
For one thing: this book is called "Gentle Rogue." Rogue? Clearly. Overtly noted. "Gentle?" Hardly :( Before I even got to the middle I didn't want my own very James at all, not even a piece. His droll wit was nice, but he's so insulting and degrading! He thinks he can get away with calling Georgina a "wench" and that she'd make a fine mistress. These remarks coupled with his manipulation of Georgina with his strength likened to a "brick wall," his stubborn words, and his body never made me sigh with longing or adoration. He's either ignoring significant questions, degrading Georgi's self-worth when he opens his mouth, or doesn't say anything at all.
Simply; there was no warm laughter, soul-bearing words, tender caresses, compassionate respect and understanding, basic communication! It's just empty words the author tried to use to make me believe that there was more than lust between the two. There's this love scene where Georgi feels like she gave her soul to him again, but I couldn't believe it, couldn't FEEL it. More than once I wanted the heroine to stand up for herself and stop letting things slide. She was so weak to me :( and I'm all about female empowerment. Sadly, I just couldn't see them being matched at all in harmony. There were times when something heart-rendering could have been said or done, but love never made an appearance. Empty words made me grasp for even the smallest of redeeming words but I can't be forced to believe it's love.
What a disappointment. I feel unsettled and ill after having read such a pass for a "romance" novel. I never take the idea of love for granted and cherish the heck out of it. James and Georgina could have had that! I just feel bad for them rather than envy them like I do with the other couples I have read about.
Summary of Gentle Rogue (Malory Novels)Heartsick and desperate to return home to America, Georgina Anderson boards the Maiden Anne disguised as a cabin boy, never dreaming she'll be forced into intimate servitude at the whim of the ship's irrepressible captain, James Mallory. The black sheep of a proud and tempestuous family, the handsome ex-pirate once swore no woman alive could entice him into matrimony. But on the high seas his resolve will be weakened by an unrestrained passion and by the high-spirited beauty whose love of freedom and adventure rivals his own.
