Book Reviews of Girls in TrucksBook Review: Knock out book! Summary: 5 Stars
I LOVED this book. What a debut! Sarah Walters: hilarious, heart-broken, searching. She's just a beautiful, deep character. Her disappointments and her struggles and the solutions she finds are so intriguing. This book was addictive for me, partly because the writing is just fantastic (it has the two essential elements in fiction for me--humor and sadness) and partly because it is hard, I think, for any woman in America not to relate to some of this. It's like talking to my sister.
What is Katie Crouch writing now? That's what I want to know. Clearly this is a writer we haven't seen the last of, not by a long shot.
Book Review: Darling Summary: 5 Stars
I was reluctant to buy this novel because I thought it was a coming of age story that would end somewhere around the college years. I was pleasantly surprised to have been wrong. This book was a pleasant and easy read with several unexpected twists and turns. It covered a span of many years and felt true to life, as though it could have happened to someone I know. I got the pleasure of meeting Katie Crouch at a recent book signing and she was lovely, open and funny just like her writing. What a treat. p.s. I love the cover picture.
Book Review: A huge disappointment Summary: 1 Stars
As an avid reader who enjoys books about smart, sassy southern women, I could not have been more disappointed in this book. The main character is a pathetic woman who achieves nothing and gives in to drugs and abusive relationships seemingly because she has nothing better to do. The storyline is muddled and often includes details that left me wondering, "why is this important?". I had to force myself to finish this book, and once I did I promptly returned it and got my money back. Save yourself some money and leave this one on the shelf.
Book Review: Good and bad bits Summary: 3 Stars
I thought how she through lesbianism into the ending was ackward and forced. Like she had to include some kind of homosexuality to be hip and in the times so she tacked it onto the end.
The asian insults were also forced and unnecessary. I can see her putting off that demographic and never winning it back.
She's onto something though with this quick pace and interesting style of storytelling. I enjoyed the read just thought it needed some more substance and a better ending.
Book Review: Great book! Summary: 5 Stars
I loved this beautifully written book. In the hands of another writer, Sarah could easily be annoying and unlikeable. But Crouch has managed to create a lost and self-destructive character who nonetheless charms the reader.
My one quibble is not with the book itself but the with the marketing. "Girls in Trucks" is really a series of stand-alone stories which together make up a cohesive whole. It is not the traditional, linear novel I was expecting after reading the book jacket.
