Book Reviews of Glorious One-Pot Meals

Book Review: Amazing One Pot Meals
Summary: 5 Stars

This is an amazing cookbook and a very inventive new method of cooking. However, my first question is, how did she come up with this. I've cooked for years using crock-pots and found myself tiring of the "stewed" consistancy of the finished meal. And then having to prepare, in addition to the main course, my veggies and starch. But as my sweet old country grandmother would say, "This ain't no crock pot baby. What an amazing thing to see. A complete meal, where the potato's were firm, the green beans were crunchy and the white fish was dripping with flavorful juice, emerging from one pot so quickly that I barely had time to get out of my work clothes and check my email. And the wonderful aromas that filled the house shortly before it was ready, beckoned me more urgently than the oven timer. I've cooked six of the recipes as of this date, and have only had one self-inflicted problem. My 2 qt. Dutch was dirty so I used my 3.5 qt. and didn't adjust. This caused the meat to come out a little dry because the "re-drip" from the lid apparently ran down the sides. If you like quick healthy meals that are also delicious, I highly recommend this book.

Book Review: A Glorious New Way of Cooking
Summary: 5 Stars

The first time I was introduced to Glorious One-Pot Meals was last Fall when the Rocky Mountain News ran an article about Elizabeth Yarnell. I liked the featured recipes and loved the idea of cooking a complete meal in only ONE pot. So, I requested a dutch oven for Christmas and put it on our "wish list". I was thrilled when we received a Le Creuset dutch oven as a gift from family members. I quickly went out and purchased the cookbook at Tattered Cover Book Store in Denver and read it cover to cover. I followed the shopping list suggestions in the book and started cooking right away. We received the larger 3.5 size which works out perfectly as I can double the recipes and have leftovers for another evening's meal. My partner and I love all the meals we have prepared so far. I just have to remember to divide the meal into 4 servings and put 2 servings in the refrigerator or else we will devour the whole meal!! The only exception so far is to eat the entire meal right away if it contains fresh fish. Otherwise, leftover fish becomes too strong for my liking. Bravo to Elizabeth for introducing this wonderful and healthy new way of cooking!!

Book Review: If you can only have 2 Cookbooks this is one of them!
Summary: 5 Stars

The 2 cookbooks that have displaced the others on my book shelf are Glorious One-Pot Meals by Elizabeth Yarnell, and Four Ingredient CookBook by Joanna Farrow -printed by Hermes House, and in case you are wondering mashed potatoes is counted as one ingredient.
There is little to no overlap between the two in recipes, but a comparison between styles shows what I like/don't like about the "Glorious One Pot Meals" book:

pros

-Spiral binding that lays flat makes more sense.

cons

-Lack of color pictures.
-The print IS rather small, especially as most pages have
blank space on them.
-Quantities should be given in metric as well as imperial for worldwide cooks.

However I don't think these slight negatives will prevent you from enjoying this book. I highly recommend both books.

By the way if you are concerned about your Le Creuset knobs melting at 450 degrees, you can now purchase stainless steel ones from bedbathbeyond for about $8 each.

Book Review: Very Tasty & More Prep Than Expected
Summary: 4 Stars

My husband, Randy, loved the one-pot idea, so he was the first one to try this method. He fixed the Comfort Chicken recipe, adding in all his favorite veggies -- potatoes, squash, 2 kinds of mushrooms, green beans and a lot of rosemary. It was very delicious and satisfying. Indeed, the veggies retained their potent flavors with that aromatic "roasted" taste as well. There was plenty of tasty juice on the bottom to pour over the whole dish, and nothing was dried out. I've always cooked or baked "by smell," so the instructions of knowing when it's ready, by the fragrance, worked for me. It was great not having to fix anything else for that meal. There were two things that were slightly disappointing: Randy worked for about an hour putting it together before it went into the oven -- granted he's not real fast in the kitchen. The second was the pot was more difficult to clean than normal. I finally got the Soft & Scrub out, and that did the trick very quickly. I'm excited to try the next recipe!

Book Review: Perfect for the Work Week!
Summary: 5 Stars

While not as important to me, my husband enjoys sitting down to a dinner every night. During the work week, we are busy with work, going to the gym after work, and family. There's not much time left to cook a "meal".

For the quick work-week dinner, this technique ROCKS! I can come home, toss together a few things from my fridge and/or freezer and pop it in the oven in about the same time it takes to lookup the pizza delivery number and place an order. Then I can lay on the sofa, take a shower, talk on the phone....in about 40 minutes or so, we have dinner: rice or pasta, meat/chicken/fish, and veggies.

What is so unreal is that everything tastes like it was cooked independently and we don't have to fuss. Oh, cleanup after dinner is only the one pot.

I am using this technique about 2-3 times a week, and so far every dinner has been different and has come out great. I highly recommend this book especially for the busy person who wants healthy meals.
