Book Review: A great first book to read; also enjoyable as you get older
Summary: 5 Stars
This is arguably the best first book for toddlers and babies to have read to them, and to serve as the first book for young children to read. The pictures are exceptionally engaging. Our daughter is often discussing an image ("Roller skates!"), anticipating the next page (she says "Wheeee!" just before the dog will roll down the coaster), or asking to see the previous page again ("Moon!"). This is among her favorite books to request at night, even though she has read it more than any other and now has newer books to read that she also enjoys very much. She has long since memorized the story. I was amazed when she was reciting the most abstract part of the book (the page of questions toward the end) just before I reached that page -- just a tribute to how fantastic the storyline is.
Many of the pages have just a phrase of a few words ("Blue dog" or "Play dogs, play"), which makes it easy for young kids to manage as one of their first books. There are some complete sentences and also some questions as the book develops, showing the transition from a basic idea (that is, the phrases) to complete thoughts (sentences and questions). It's practical in its instructive language development, though of course kids appreciate just the great pictures and wonderful story.
The book teaches many colors (like red, blue, and green) and other adjectives (like big and little). It also teaches important short words like up, in, out, and over there. Our daughter was fascinated with sun and moon when she first discovered them in the sky, and really enjoyed the pages in this book that feature the sun and moon. One of my favorite pages is where the dogs are sleeping. Kids naturally don't like to go to bed at the end of the day: This page shows all (but one!) dog sleeping at night.
The pictures and story have CHARM -- that's what makes the book so wonderful. Here are a few examples: A couple of dogs or their actions are out of place in the bedroom images; the boy dog steals the feather from the hat of the girl dog in one meeting; and the expressions of the dogs in general are just perfect. I would draw a Seussian creature with 32 thumbs just so that I could give this book 32 thumbs up!
