Book Reviews of Go, Dog. Go! (Beginner Books)Book Review: A fun -- and educational -- classic! Summary: 5 Stars
I hadn't seen this book for at least 25 years or more, until my mom started reading it to my son (her grandson). I was instantly transported back to my own young childhood, to the point where I remembered pages before turning to them. I remembered where the dogs were going and why they were going fast -- they were going to a dog party, a big dog party!
Our 2.5 year old boy really loves this book, and even more satisfying, I can see it really making him think about language and how to say things. Beyond the little "romance" story line, I personally think the main benefit of this book is that it shows a little one how the English language works.
Think prepositions. If you've ever tried to learn a foreign language or know one, you'll know that prepositions, and how they work are among the most difficult things to master. This book shows how most of them work, for example, "two dogs, in a house, on a boat, in the water," illustrated to demonstrate the meaning.
Our little guy is growing up bilingual (American Dad, Italian Mom), so his speaking is somewhat delayed as he sorts everything out. It was a true joy to hear him the other night say "green up" (well, more like "geen up") and "yellow down" for the page where "the green dog is up, and the yellow dog is down."
So, as the many other reviews have noted, there is so much positive about this book, and I join the others in recommending it very much. Fun, educational, and interesting to look at -- what more could there be in a kids' book?
Book Review: I highly recommend this book to all parents of preschoolers. Summary: 5 Stars
My soon-to-be two year old son Jackson has a prized collection of books, in which the pages of P.D. Eastman's Go,Dog Go! are worn, wrinkled, and stained with fruit juice. In places, they are even torn. This is a good thing. The first time we sat down together in the rocking chair to read it, at least a year ago now, Go, Dog Go! charmed child and mother alike from beginning to end. I knew then that this book, with its simplicity and original, appealing characters, would join the ranks of the constantly-read, which reside apart from the rest in his library. These select few sit next to the lamp on his nightstand; you cannot keep them on the bookshelf, so why bother to try? From the different sizes, colors, shapes and locations of the dogs, to the reappearing and increasingly complex matter of the hat, Go, Dog Go! delights Jackson each and every time. It is mandatory bedtime reading (according to him). It goes with us in the car to the sitter's house, the doctor's office, and on road trips. Like Dr. Seuss and Beatrix Potter, Eastman possesses the creative ability to stimulate, entrance, and comfort even the youngest of readers with colorful language, rhyme, and winsome animals all children can relate to. Go, Dog Go! is educational, medicinal, and functional dressed up as just plain fun, and that, perhaps, is its most worthy quality of all.
Book Review: Go, Dog. Go! (This book is great!) Summary: 5 Stars
This is one of the most interesting and exciting books that your child will ever read in his/her lifetime! This has been one of the top three favorite books of mine since I was a child. To all of you silly little gooses out there, you better buy this book because it was created just for you. It will really bring out the creative side of your children. It really doesn't have a big moral or lesson or anything. That's what makes it so different and funny. This is a book for learning how to read. Not learning a lesson. It's just really fun to read, and to listen to when someone reads it to you. "Dog. Big dog, little dog." That's how the story begins. How it ends? Read it and find out! You can either purchase it here online, or go to a store, or what I would do, rent it out from the library. I mean, why would you just go out and buy it, without knowing if you're going to like it? (I know that I'm supposed to try to make you buy it from here but I mean, I wouldn't. So I don't expect you to either.) All I'm here to do is to say how much I love and enjoy this book and think that you would too. I recommend it highly. So after hearing what I have to say about it, go do something nice for your children and yourself, and go read this book.
Book Review: GO, DOG. GO !! Summary: 5 Stars
My little grandson is 6 years old and was experiencing some trouble with his reading in first grade. My Mother-in Law in the Chicago Suburbs told me that she read this book to all four of her children when they were having difficulty reading years ago, along with all of the Dr. Suess books as well...
All of her children turned out to be Professionals, one is a Bi-lingual teacher, then there's a Physical Therapist amd a Professor of Language Arts at a nearby University and one became an Executive for a very large Auto Manufacturing Company for 30 yrs. So, I ordered the "Go, Dog. Go !" book for him.
He was so excited to get his own package in the mail, that we sat down on the couch immediately and he read the whole book to me, all 62 pages of it !!! He just had a few little problems with the "wh" and the "th" words, otherwise he did fantastic !! Since then, his reading in school has improved greatly, and his teacher and parents are thrilled. So am I !! He understood the underlying humor in the book, and looked forward to every next page.
Thanks for a great price too !! Jan Jimenez, Danbury, CT.
Book Review: Brilliant Revelation on Interpersonal Relationships Summary: 5 Stars
Once in generation comes a book that can delight the youngest of readers yet captivate adults with its uncanny insights on human nature and companionship. P. D. Eastman's literary opus achieves this with his deceptively simple story about canines in transit.
Sure, kids love the zaniness and the joyous world of the big dog party. But Eastman's genius is his observations on human nature simmering beneath the surface of his story. His brilliance shows in the oft-repeated scene in which a male dog provides negative feedback on a female dog's choice of headwear. These scenes are nothing more than Eastman's take on pursuit, rejection and ultimate redemption (when the male dog finally approves of her hat), which form the very heart of human relationships. The penultimate "dog party" is Eastman's commentary on community and friendship, and the various colors of the dogs in the story (blue, red, green, etc.) reflect the moods that envelop us as we go about our lives.
A kid's story? Sure. But we adults can learn a lot about each other as we read this story to our little ones.
