Book Reviews of God Gave Us ChristmasBook Review: Adorable! Summary: 5 Stars
Little Cub is excited about Christmas and when Mama mentions God, little cub asks questions like "Who Invented Christmas?" and "Is God more important than Santa?" Mama Bear and Little Cub set out for the mountains to learn about God and His gift to us. Mama Bear teaches Little Cub about God by using God's masterful creation surrounding them. With the beautiful artwork and gentle teachings, this book is a perfection in its simplicity. Who could resist the cute smiling bears! More importantly, is the clear message of God's gift of Jesus as the real meaning of Christmas. Santa is given the lower position of a reminder of Christ's love. This would be a wonderful gift book for children, Sunday School classes, church nurseries, or day care groups.
Book Review: Good message but the story jumps Summary: 4 Stars
This book follow Mama Bear and Little Bear in their quest to show God to Little Bear. This tale jumps around a bit, moving from one conversation to the next day without leading the reader. The things Mama Bear shows Little Bear to demonstrate God at work are interesting. But when they come to the nativity scene it occurred to me "Wait, these are bears talking about why God needed to send a person down to Earth." I don't know why it struck me, but it stuck with me through the rest of the book. I did enjoy the ending message - that God gave each one of us Christmas and He would have given his Son even for just one person. It is a great book to have this time of year as we struggle to teach our children the real meaning of Christmas.
Book Review: I cannot say enough good things about this book... Summary: 5 Stars
While no book is ever perfect, this one is pretty good. It brings the idea of why we celebrate Christmas into a story that is different and fresh, and when combined with a biblical account helps kids keep the facts in perspective. I particularly liked the fact that Christmas is tied to the coming of Christ in a way that reminds us of the value of the stories of "Santa" or "St. Nick" yet also emphasizes that the true gift is from God. We talk a lot about the coming of Christ, but many forget that He was sent by the Father. In her own way Bergren reminds us that God has given us an amazing gift in Jesus, and this is the perfect introduction to the idea of Jesus as our gift, not just because He came, but because He died and rose again.
Book Review: God Gave Us Christmas Summary: 3 Stars
God Gave Us Christmas by Lisa Tawn Bergren is a children's book featuring a Mama Bear and her "Little Cub". Little Cub wants to know who invented Christmas. Was it Santa? Mama Bear explains that God made Christmas and they set out on an adventure to go find God and see how He gave us Christmas, because "God is everywhere". The illustrations were nicely done. I think some of the wording can be misleading because it seems to imply that God is a chunk of ice although it does clarify that "...he can command the water to freeze and the glacier to melt" - referring to the chunk of ice that fell into the sea.
I received this book for free from WaterBrook Multnomah Publishing Group in exchange for my honest review.
Book Review: Wonderful Christmas book Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this book for my six year old boy thinking it would serve two purposes. One, I thought it would bridge the gap between the real meaning of Christmas and Santa Claus. Two, independently of us, my little guy has developed a real fascination with God and Jesus so I thought it would be a nice way to compliment those feelings.
I was more right than I thought. He absolutely LOVES this book. He has read it every night since I bought it and he sleeps with it under his pillow. It's a great story that is neither bible bouncing nor Santa bashing. I love the way it shows how you can "see" God-very useful for teaching little ones. I highly recommend this to anybody of any age but especially the little ones.
