Book Reviews of Godless: The Church of LiberalismBook Review: Provocative for Profit, but damaging in the process Summary: 1 Stars
Her M.O. is pretty clear. I watched her interviewed by Chris Matthews recently which reinforced this very openly.
You either have to be very insightful and respected to sell books on these topics, or be controversial. She's not the former, so she's aggressive about being controversial. If she provoked no emotion, she'd be dull and dull (without content) doesn't sell.
Being noticed makes you stand out in a crowded market of political discourse, and that sells -- speeches, books, etc.
So she dresses unlike the normal talking head. The long dyed hair. Etc. That gets noticed.
And she makes comments that are so far over the top that they stop you in your tracks. para: "Who cares how many of them we kill."
And then the truth comes out -- its really not about the point of view, its about making money. When John Edwards quoted a vicious personal attack she made on him, she said "I don't mind if he makes money off of me in his fundraising -- I made more money on that" from speeches, book sales, etc.
I suppose that's good business, if people buy the book. Unfortunately, she lowers the discourse in the process and fuels the fire of division in the country. So I'd encourage you to say "no" to that and not support the damage she is doing.
Book Review: Trash - Cover to Cover Summary: 1 Stars
This is probably the worst written, edited, thought-out book I have ever attempted to read. I am saying attempted, because I did not and will not finish it. Reading this book feels like major offence to my brain and common sense.
The paragraphs are very badly constructed. Train of thought is really not comprehensible. Conclusions she draws on the evidence presented make as much sense is if they were inferred by a 4 year old. Actually, I know 4 year olds that have more common sense than this Ann Coulter. The language used is so simple, it makes me wonder: Who is the audience for this book? The people who can possibly enjoy this kind of a simple trashy language can't even read.
This is such a waste of paper, ink and money. God, it's a waste of my time even getting angry about it. The publisher of the book is Crown Publishing. If they can agree to publish this revolting accumulation of non-sense, what other garbage are they pushing on the public? I am boycotting them and not purchasing anything else published by them. This is a violation against anyone who enjoys reading.
The books worth keeping, stay in my library (and I do keep a lot of my books), but the books I don't enjoy as much I donate to the local library. "Godless" by Ann Coulter is going straight to the trash. I consider it a crime letting anyone else offend themselves by reading this garbage.
Book Review: Moron Summary: 2 Stars
The old saying that intelligence does not equal wisdom is never so evident than when Ms. Coulter writes.
I am not a democrat or a republican, I look for the truth and the best possible option that's placed in front of me given any circumstance/political idea.
Ms. Coulter is a very intelligent woman. She collects her thoughts well and this book, like most of hers, is organized into specific ideas and she does well at trying her hardest to make the reader agree with her.
Well- actually I think she tries too hard.
Ms. Coulter is so blind to any form of reasoning that I feel insulted that she actually has a job and is successful for her moronic views.
If she ever stepped backed and actually lost her biased views, the could very well be a great journalist and writer. As it is though- she is simply a hate-monger and an idiot.
Incase you haven't read anything of hers before- if you remember the movie American Beauty, where Annette Benning starts spazzing out and nearly has a breakdown- that's right along the lines of the normal personality Ms. Coulter conveys.
Avoid this book unless you are a hard nosed republican and feel the need for an ego boost, as it says nothing new and only hurts her reputation I feel. Do give thought to the option of a future book of hers though- as one day she may pull her own head out of her own butt.
Book Review: Zero stars Summary: 1 Stars
Ann Coulter's book is a work of fiction. She shows her total ignorance of science. On any topic such as evolution you can always find a dissenting scientist. But the vast majority of scientists accept that evolution is a fact. The theory is in how evolution works. The Cambrian explosion was not an explosion. It took 20 million years to occur and the Burgess shale fossils show that the prototypes already existed much before the so called explosion. The HOX genes that direct the bodies arrangements already existed. The reason for the so called explosion was that the level of oxygen increased dramatically in our atmoshere allowing for the surge of new species. Ann makes another 15-20 errors in trying to debunk science. Ann would rather have the Dark Ages again when religion ruled and science was forbidden by the church. She is typical of the religious extremists that want to replace science in our classrooms and in its place put religion as the explanation for everything. Ann is ignorant and arrogant. But she sells her books because she panders to the public which is unfortunately also science illiterate. She sees the world in black and white colors and nothing in between is acceptable. Please do not waste your time or money on this worthless and distorted book.
Book Review: Hate-filled nonsense Summary: 1 Stars
The worst book of the year by far. Haven't read it yet? Don't bother- I'll sum it up for you. Ready, here goes: Liberals are evil. There's no serious attempt by Coulter to engage liberal ideology and refute it. She merely caricatures it and attacks straw men. The positions she takes are completely indefensible (e.g. evolution is a massive lie by evil biologists, the famous August bin Laden memo didn't mean what it clearly said, teachers are overpaid, etc..).
Not only was the book nonsense, it was hateful. As Jerry Coyne points out in his review at the New Republic, Coulter makes the following ad hominem attacks: Cindy Sheehan doesn't look good in shorts, Al Franken resembles a monkey, and the 9/11 widows enjoyed the deaths of their husbands. Isn't there something in the Bible about doing unto others?
The scary thought is that Godless is a best seller. That's a disturbing fact that concerns me. Its popularity is a sad reflection on the state of American society. I would ask the conservatives who gave it 5 stars a serious question: do you really want Coulter as your spokesperson? I'll give you a little advice: Rational arguments convince people to change their minds much more often than obnoxious name-calling.
