Book Review: Socialize the dog trainer

I'm just glad I'm not a dog in this man's house.
Early socialization and a show of open affection perhaps would have helped this trainer. During an obviously critical developmental period in his life he was exposed to an 'old school' trainer who sadly left an indelible impression on his ideas of how to 'train' a dog.
For a man who claims to have over 20 years of experience training dogs, he seems to have failed to read the face on the dog he is jerking the leash on, in the photos on pages 156- 157. Toss a piece of bread down and when the young dog goes for it, SNAP the leash at the dog. If this isn't a sure fire way to encourage resource aggression and distrust I don't know what is. JERK is the common theme here.
I've also grown tired of the innuendo created by the title, "Good Owners, Great Dogs" in some veiled reference that anyone other than a professional dog trainer is just some hapless dupe bumbling along through dog ownership ruining every canine they come in contact with unless given strict direction. Did I mention strict? If you aren't perfect in this dog world then forget it. You'll be euthanized or brought back to the breeder.
There is no such thing as a PERFECTLY behaved dog and I for one wouldn't want one. It's the loving daily interaction and variety in that relationship between dog and owner that makes for an enriching life experience.
Ideas and understanding evolves and hopefully improves. Unfortunately in my opinion this book is a step backward.
Time to move forward WITHOUT the leash beneath your heal.
