Book Reviews of Good Owners, Great Dogs

Book Review: Please read a positive training book also
Summary: 1 Stars

PLEASE read a positive training book before you make up your mind how to train your dog. This book has some good points and methods. I used to train this way. Two books and my new puppy have changed me forever.

If you read TREATS, PLAY, LOVE, buy Patricia Burnham. You will never look at your dog the same way!
"The Power of Positive Training" is also good. (I use praise in place of the clicker.) But Burnham's book discusses several different types of training, very openly, logically, and even historically.

If you are looking at this, then you are trying to find the best way to live with you new, lovable pet, or perhaps get it ready for competition or working. It cannot hurt you to take the time to read other methods.

What I have now is a 5 month old puppy who begs to start a training session, even when we are at a crowded park. Don't worry, he still runs around and plays with the other dogs plenty, as a well sociallized dog should. He is learning so much faster than any dog I have ever trained. He may just be a genius, but perhaps it's me who is being trained.

Book Review: Practicle Dog Training Advice
Summary: 5 Stars

As the author of "ASK OKSANA," a tongue-in-cheek dog advice website that is 'written' by a delusional Borzoi dog, when fans write in and ask serious behavior/training questions, GOOD OWNERS, GREAT DOGS is the only book that is recommended to ASK OKSANA's fans because Brian Kilcommons is one of the few dog trainers that really knows what he is doing. In this simple book, Kilcommons is able to impart his practicle dog training methods so that one can follow his advice and actually see results rapidly. There's no magic to obedience training; it's a matter of establishing who is Alpha and conveying your commands to the dog and praising instantly when the dog is doing what you want him to do. Yes, there are others who preach food rewards and clicker training, but what do you do when you have no treats or the clicker? This book teaches the basics and gives advice on other important subjects like introducing a new pet to the household and other areas where owners commonly make mistakes. Highly recommended.

Book Review: A must-have for every dog owner!!!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

Did you ever get a dog and wish it had come with its own instruction book? THIS is the instruction book!

Brian Kilcommons is a highly experienced dog trainer who tells you everything you need to know when getting a dog. This book covers where to look for a puppy, how to select a puppy, 4 simple tests to use on puppies you are considering. The puppy's first day home, house breaking, feeding, walking, commands.

Also a great book for older dogs, it is never too late to start!

I bought this book when I bought my first dog and was desperately trying to train her. She was a perfect dog her whole life and I pulled this book out from time to time right up to when I needed the section on euthenizing my beloved friend.

Now it is required reading for my whole family because today we brought home a new puppy! I'm not worried about training her or raising her, because Brian Kilcommons is with me every step of the way!

Book Review: Best Dog Book I've Read
Summary: 5 Stars

We recently got our first puppy (a Bichon Frise). So we read about 15 books on choosing, training and caring for a dog. There are many other books that I would highly recommend, such as The Art of Raising Puppies. But overall, I found this book by Brian Kilcommons to be the most helpful. It gave us several tips (tests) we could try out on puppy candidates to help us choose a puppy - and they worked. The book could be better organized as others have suggested. But it contains tons of very useful information regarding commands, ear care, dangerous foods, exercise, the life of a dog etc. On top of all that the book is very well written with a great sense of humor. So be careful if you read this book while on a subway. You're likely to break out laughing -- and feel embarassed while other commuters stare at you. 55555 STARS. P.S. - the Authors have a more recent book called Metro Dog which is also very good. But Good Owners, Great Dogs is better.

Book Review: From Wau! to Wow!
Summary: 5 Stars

To me the book was an interesting example for the US-American approach (I'm German). It's great, the fun-fair-firm motto can't be emphasized too often! Fun! The book shows in every example, how you should adjust your human viewpoint to that of your dog's and not to that of your nerves, even if that's not what we normally do..I loved the example stories, but then I generally want explications. If you want a three step advice, you might have to check the index, but it's all there. Brian Kilcommon treats all dogs fair, I've noticed in other books, that some authors could not refrain from ridiculing small breeds or s.th. The fotos, in my opinion, really reveal that that man loves dogs and is serious about what he tells you because he lives it. I'm going to push this book into the hands of all dog owners I know! With the heartfelt wish, that one dog, whose only wish is his/her owners happiness might be treated better, with more fun to both sides!
