Book Reviews of Good Owners, Great DogsBook Review: The best dog training book I've ever read Summary: 5 Stars
Because there are so many differing methods of training your dog, I did a lot of research and read a lot of reviews before buying this book several years ago. The methods in it are humane and nice and extremely effective. Using primarily this book (though also The Art of Raising a Puppy by the Monks of New Skete), my dog is now five years old and extremely well behaved. I get compliments on his obedience all the time, and I attribute all of my/his success to this book.
The advice in the book is really excellent, but even more powerful is how it will help you understand how dogs think so you can apply that knowledge to new situations. He covers a wide variety of specifics about what to do in different kinds of situations, but in life there's always something out of the ordinary that will require *you* to think about how best to handle your dog. This book has given me a very strong framework and I can't recommend it highly enough.
Book Review: Some Dogs Are Different Summary: 4 Stars
OK, I got a dog that was beyond my training capabilities. I have always had German Shepards and I took them to basic training, then the rest was easy. But, I got a male German Shepard puppy, who took me to the brink. He was biting everything, including me, and I couldn't stop him. I bought this book for HELP. It actually gave some great suggestions, but there was one part that I didn't like. Brian seems to tout that it is the owner's 'fault' if the dog is problematic. I disagree, just like with kids, dogs each have their own personalities. Some dogs are easy-going, gentle, and easy to train. Other dogs are tempermental, aggresive, and tough to train. In fact, I would go so far as to say, that some dogs have emotional problems, just like some kids do.
So, I would recommend this book, but with the reservation that he is a little too hard on owners. Julee Meltzer, author of 'Camping and RVing with Dogs'.
Book Review: my favorite dog training book Summary: 5 Stars
I grew up training animals in Idaho, especially horses and hunting dogs. When I got my first dog as an adult, while living in New York City, I bought several dog training books just to see what methods folks were recommending these days. This one was my favorite. It avoids 2 things which are really common: 1) training using rough methods, which is what I had learned and 2)the esoteric new-agey kind of advice very popular these days, which makes dog-training seem difficult or even like an inherent ability some people have and others don't (e.g., "you have to project the right energy to your dog" or "you have to learn how to act like a wolf"). This book makes dog-training seem really simple and common-sensical, which it is. Once you understand and try the methods it recommends you can hardly believe you didn't think of them yourself, they seem so obvious. It also makes training fun, for both you and your dog.
Book Review: Possibly The Only Training Guide You'll Ever Need Summary: 5 Stars
Having recently adopted a beagle puppy, we just can't say enough about this book. Well written and easy to understand, it covers nearly everything a dog owner would want or need to know. From housebreaking and training a young pup, to caring for a senior dog, this book covers all the bases. Determining which breed is best for you, understanding what to expect from your new pal, grooming and healthcare, teaching basic commands, correcting unwanted behaviors...the material is presented in a clear, concise manner. Peppered with humor, lots of pictures, a "tips" column every few pages and even true dog stories to illustrate a particular point, this book is both super informative and a downright pleasurable reading experience. We've looked at several other canine training guides but, in our opinion, this one is by far the best...possibly the only one you'll ever need.
Book Review: The Best Dog Guide Out There Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this book 13 years ago when I adopted my golden retriever and I used the information in this book to build a healthy, loving and harmonious relationship with my dog.
This book gave me solutions during the tough stage when my sweet-eyed puppy developed the infuriating habit of chewing up artwork and sentimental keepsakes in my home and it gave me the tools I needed to understand and train my dog.
My golden was known for being "mannerly" and well trained and I give a lot of credit to "Good Owners, Great Dogs."
I said goodbye to my golden earlier this year and will be adopting a new dog from the Humane Society this week. I had to find a new copy of this book, too, because someone forgot to return it after borrowing it (tsk, tsk)! I am so happy to see it is still in print!!!
