Book Reviews of Good Owners, Great DogsBook Review: This book worked for me, a cat person not used to dogs Summary: 5 Stars
I thought that Mr. Kilcommons had a lot of great ideas. The thing is you use what works and your leave the rest. Not every trainer works for every dog. The main thing is that the person must be the alpha dog and act properly so that your dog respects you and wants to work for you.
I like the fact that Mr. Kilcommons says that the owners need to do their part, such as exercise. If a dog misbehaves, a lot of time it may be because they are not getting enough exercise. So if they still misbehave, give them more exercise. There is a lot of responsibility to being an owner. Also, I saw the results regarding using plastic bowls for my cats; I used Mr. Kilcommons' advice in using ceramic or stainless steel bowls instead and one my cats lost her black mark on her chin. So the book has a lot of good advice.
Book Review: Good Owners, Great Dogs Summary: 5 Stars
If ever there was a book for dog training that should be on the shelf of every home it's this one!As a professional dog trainer that specializes in the "family dog" I recommend this book to ALL my clients for the following reasons: It's well written. It's practical advice with a dash of humor, as you can't raise a puppy without a sense of humor! Don't have a sense of humor? You'll get one quick when you get a puppy and get this book! Of course my slant on this book is as a professional. But I will say that the feed back from my clients who are novice dog handlers is 100% positive! I highly recommend this book not only for yourself if you need training advice, but give it as a gift to a friend who is "expecting" or to your neighbor with the jumping lab!
Book Review: Excellent Summary: 5 Stars
If you love your dog(s) then read this book. I became a first time dog owner at 42 years old, now I own 3 and have read many books. The best two are this one and How To Raise a Puppy You Can Live With. This book goes through everything you need to know to train a puppy or an adult dog. Clearly the authors know what they are talking about, bring a lot of experience to the book and they truly understand and love dogs. Their enthusiam reminds me why I got dogs to begin with, when patience occasionally runs thin. They make it clear you have to make it fun for your dog and take things in steps. They have also written an excellent book called Good Owners, Great Cats. Any time you spend learning about your pet will pay for itself many time over. Love my dogs, love this book.
Book Review: Thank God for this book. Summary: 5 Stars
If my sister hadn't sent me this book, I would have continued my well-intentioned training methods riddled with blunders, confusing myself as well as a 4 mo. old Border Collie. I've owned this book for two weeks, just finished it, and have changed my views on training forever. I've implemented all I've learned in my daily sessions with Daisy and the results are totally great. She responds very well, eager to please, eager to learn, especially with my positive attitude and confidence during the lesson because I finally understand how to teach the material and WHY. I have a happy, busy pup and took the time to write this critique because I am so impressed with this book. If common sense practices appeal to your intellect, get this book. You won't be disappointed.
Book Review: A Training Manual for Humans Summary: 5 Stars
Groucho Marx said: "Outside of a dog, a book is man's best friend. Inside of a dog, it's too dark to read." Dogs have been our companions since the beginning of time. Yet, their natural behaviors can ruin your relationship with your dog, your neighbor, with other people and other dogs. Every time I reached that point of ruined relationships with our beagle, I went back to Brian Kilcommons and Sarah Wilson's book and discovered the joy of having my beagle again. Best book around to train humans and their dogs. Tips include: housebreak puppies and adult dogs, train them through games, prevent aggression, end annoying habits and have them return to you no matter what they are doing. A must read for the frustrated and those who what to avoid frustration.
