Book Reviews of Good Owners, Great Dogs

Book Review: Before you know it, you'll be looking for it, get it.
Summary: 5 Stars

Hey, listen to me, when I got a pup, i had hardly a slight idea on what to do, how to train it, look after it, etc. So, my mom bought me this book called "Good Owners, Great Dogs". I refused to read it, but before I knew it, I was searching for it all over the place at home. When I finally found it, I took it to my room, read it, learned it, and put it back where I had found it. The next day mom saw me training the pup, taking it for a walk, bathing it, taking it to the vet for vaccinations, and all that. Mom was surprised all right. So she asked me how I knew so much on dogs. I had no option and so I told her that I had read the book she had bought for me. So, trust me, get this book and in less than a week, you'll know how to handle a pup or a dog.

Book Review: Best For Dog Training
Summary: 5 Stars

A few years ago, I decided I'd train my new puppy, Finley. I didn't know how to do it well, so I bought one book after the other. I read most of them, including the Monks from New Skete, Dog Training for Dummies, clicker training books, etc. Finally, I purchased THIS book and realized that it had everything you really need to know about dog training. It has copious photographic illustrations, no need to remember to bring your "clicker" with you and it's done in the Barbara Woodhouse way - gently and humanely. The only thing I missed about this book was the "Puppy Aptitude Testing" that is in Dog Training for Dummies. It's available on the internet at http://www.volhard.com/puppy/pat.htm.I recommend that everyone before buying a puppy, use this test.(...)

Book Review: My first and best training book
Summary: 5 Stars

This was the first book I bought before I brought my standard poodle puppy home 7 years ago. It was invaluable as I was unable to start training until my puppy had completed all of his shots, and I was scared spitless. The methods are tried and true and combined with the formal obedience training classes and positive food reinforcement, we graduated top puppy and handler in class that year. The recommendation for crate training and the methods used to get the puppy used to the crate were a godsend. He apprenticed with Barbara Woodhouse, that was a big draw for me. I once saw Barbara do a demonstration at a mall over 20 years ago. What she could do with a dog in less than 5 minutes was amazing. I recommend this book to all new dog owners.

Book Review: What a great book - & I don't even have a dog yet!
Summary: 5 Stars

My family and I (hopefully) will be adopting a Golden Retriever puppy in a few months. This book was recommended to me by my sister-in-law and the Golden breeder, and what a GREAT book! I'm in my second reading because the tips for preparing for a puppy, training, bonding, and having an all-around wonderful companion are numerous, but easy to understand and just plain common sense. I'll probably read it another 2 or 3 times before the puppy arrives! I want to be ready, and I want my husband and kids to be ready, and this is definitely a book that will get us there! For potential Golden Retriever owners, I also recommend "Golden Retrievers for Dummies" for more easy to understand, fun info that's breed specific.

Book Review: Great book!
Summary: 5 Stars

I looked at many books before purchasing this book and two others to prepare for my new puppy. This book is very thorough, covering everything from how to choose a puppy to puppyhood to adulthood. It dives into the canine mind so you better understand care and training. It teaches traditional correction training methods that are humane.

I recommend pairing this book with When Pigs Fly by Jane Killion. Good Owners, Great Dogs will give you all the basics and the traditional view on training, and When Pigs Fly will give you a different perspective on training. I feel the combination is very valuable. Do not worry if you don't have a terrier breed, When Pigs Fly applies to all dogs.
