Book Reviews of Good Owners, Great DogsBook Review: Must Read for any Dog Owner... Summary: 5 Stars
...After you get your dog, you MUST have this one...It's allhere, how to care for your new companion, including some valuable tipson that bugaboo of us all, housebreaking. Training gets a lot of space here, as it should, but what makes this book so special, is the authors showing you the dogs perpective on it...how what seems to make perfect sense to you is in fact confusing and contradictory to the dog, and many (most) of us reinforce bad behavior with well-meaning but (from the dogs standpoint)nonsensical actions...The long and short of it is, follow the advice given in this book and your dog will truly be "Mans' (or Womans') Best Friend. END
Book Review: A genuinely great owner's manual Summary: 5 Stars
It would be difficult for me to overestimate how valuable this book has been in raising my dog. The book is laden with great advice, and tells the reader not only what one should do and when, but also what one should *not* do -- plus why one should or shouldn't do all these things. By following the advice in this book, I was not only able to pick out a great dog for myself, but with some common-sense adjustments for my own situation I was able to raise him to be a wonderful, happy, well-behaved and very bright dog. I am forever getting complimented on how terrific my dog is, and I credit this great book for my success.
Book Review: Finally Training for all Experience levels Summary: 5 Stars
I am reading this book cover to cover. It is very well written, easy to follow with great illustrations. I have competed in obedience but has been awhile so content is familiar, but a great refresher and good for an age level to learn from easily. Practice makes perfect! I've learned alot of new ideas that make good sense. You have to learn before you can expect the dog to learn. He covers everyday home issues, manners around strangers, other dogs, starts from picking the right pup to the senior pet. This is money well spent for ANYONE with a pet or training for obedience competition!
Book Review: Excellent advice for superhumans Summary: 3 Stars
Brian Kilcommons certainly has a grip on dog psychology, and I believe if one follows his advice to the T, many dogs will be well adjusted and well behaved. However there is the reality factor: most modern day yuppies, strained for time and patience will not be able to carry out the tips to 100% capability. For example, he advises, "only spend 10 minutes per hour paying attention to your dog." Probably commendable, but do we have to carry around an egg timer? However, his advice to make a dog "work" for their comforts is an excellent one, and has reaped good behavior in my shepherd collie mix.
Book Review: Good Owners, Great dogs Summary: 5 Stars
I have a new puppy and bought three dog training books. They are all in the garbage since a family member recommended Good Owners, Great Dogs. Brian Kilcommons gives common sense advice, lots of explainations, and a general understanding of dog behavior. He not only expains how to train but why dogs respond to certain situations. If you want to have a great relationship with your dog and really understand them, read this book. You will have a smart, trainable canine! Every dog is trainable, you just need the proper tools and Mr. Kilcommons book is all you need.
