Book Review: Thin Bashing and Inconsistencies, but still a nice read

I am always looking for a good book to read on the bus to and from work. Jennifer Weiner was recommended to me from a friend. I didn't know what any of her books were about so I picked up "good in bed," because of the catchy title.
I actually did enjoy reading the book...I read it from beginning to end and wasn't disgusted or anything like that, like some of the other reviewers were. I'm pretty easy going when it comes to reading books and realize that a lot of the time, the author is writing about their dreams and fantasies and most of the time....books are not based on reality. So as far as the book being not realistic, well yes, I agree. But that is why we read books....to get out of our everyday boring lives and live someone else's life for a short period. Overall, I really enjoyed the book, ended up reading it at other times then just my bus rides and would recommend it to a friend.
There are two things I want to point out about this book besides the obvious (that it is not realistic and Cannie is a bit of a whiner, self-absorbed and rude at times.)
1st) Like some of the other reviewers mentioned, it bothered me that Weiner painted thin girls to be bitchy, non-eating, unhealthy, addicted to nicotine, unfeeling, uneducated people. As an example, the scene with the writer, Jane where Cannie is interviewing her in a restaurant and the woman orders nothing but lettuce and some vinegar....come on!!! Why in the world do you have to make it seem like thin women don't eat? I also didn't like the scene in the Star Bar where the girl said "if I had a nickel for every fat girl who has said that to me...." Again, it seemed like thin girls were made out to be bitchy snobs, which is not realistic whatsoever. I have a naturally thin frame, I'll admit that, I've never struggled with my weight. Not only do I eat a healthy diet, I am also a non-smoker, I am well educated with a good job, I am friendly to everyone....no matter what size they wear. And frankly, I don't even notice what size people wear! I have friends in all different sizes in shapes...it's not a big deal. I had absolutely no issues with the main character being a larger girl, but don't make it seem like people who are not overweight are terrible creatures.
2nd) It bothered me how on page 8 of the book Cannie said she met Bruce at party and the first time he saw her she was doing an impression of Tanya with a sling on trying to eat a crab leg. Then, on page 178 Cannie says that she JUST finds out her Mom is gay and finds out about Tanya when she is already with Bruce! She even talks about how she tells Bruce for the first time that she just found out her Mom is gay and has a girlfriend named, Tanya. What's the deal? Did she or did she not know Tanya before she met Bruce?!
I think I'll give another Weiner book a try. I was entertained by "good in bed," and enjoyed the story, even if there were a few things that bothered me about it. But, if Weiner keeps up the "thin bashing," I definitely won't be reading anymore of her books.
Summary of Good in Bed: A Novel
