Book Reviews of Goosebumps #51: Beware, the Snowman

Book Review: Jaclyn's nursery rhyme becomes a reality when she sees the Snowman!
Summary: 5 Stars

Synopsis: Jaclyn DeForest is a twelve-year-old girl who has just moved with her Aunt Greta to a flat roofed cabin in a small village called Sherpia on the edge of the Arctic Circle. She hates the idea of leaving Chicago to live in a village where it is icy throughout the year. Her aunt never really mentions why they moved, except they 'needed time for a change'. As Jaclyn moves into her new home, she notices an eerie looking snowman across her house, with an ugly scar on his face and a red scarf around his neck.

Soon, Jaclyn befriends two other kids named Rolonda and Eli Browning. She notices them building a snowman in the same manner as the one she saw across the street. When Jaclyn tells them that she is planning on walking to the top of the mountains, Rolonda and Eli warn her not to. She decides to ignore them and keeps walking. As she goes past the other houses, she notices the same snowmen built in front of each house. Soon, she comes across a cabin and thinking it is isolated, goes inside. She gets scared when she sees a wolf and a strange angry man named Conrad coming after her in the cabin and escapes them, hearing the man shouting "Beware, the Snowman" behind her.

When Jaclyn tries to investigate the mystery behind the snowman, she realizes who her family and friends her, but can she escape the snowman?

Review: This is one of my favorite Goosebumps books, because of the eerie environment that R. L. Stine creates. Stine successfully takes the image of a cute snowman and turns it into something of horror in this book.

Some parts of the book that kept me to the edge of my seat were:
(1) When Jaclyn encounters Conrad and tries to escape him,
(2) When Rolonda starts telling her about the story behind the snowman, and
(3) the ending. Although I am used to the type of cliffhangers that the author writes at the end of each chapter (from reading several Goosebumps books), the cliffhangers towards the end of this book, where Jaclyn has to figure out who is telling the truth, were some of the best ones I have read in the series, that kept me gripped to the story.

I also liked the fact that there were a lot of mysterious events taking place in this book apart from the snowman. We are also faced with why Jaclyn's aunt decided to bring her here, and why Conrad lives near the top of the mountain without meeting anyone, or why Jaclyn keeps remembering the rhyme of the snowman in her head.

Overall, this is a classic `chilling' tale, and definitely one of my favorites in the series, and I would recommend it to anyone who likes to read a good suspense thriller.

Summary of Goosebumps #51: Beware, the Snowman

They're baa-ack! Make way for the bestselling children's series of all time! With a fresh new look, GOOSEBUMPS is set to scare a whole new generation of kids. So reader beware--you're in for a scare!

No melting allowed!

Jaclyn used to live with her aunt Greta in Chicago. But not anymore. They've moved to a place called Sherpia. It's a tiny village on the edge of the Arctic Circle.

Jaclyn can't believe she's stuck out in Nowheresville. No movie theaters. No malls. No nothing. Plus, there's something really odd about the village.

At night there are strange howling noises. And in front of every house there's a snowman. A creepy snowman with a red scarf. A deep scar on his face. And a really evil smile. . . .
