Book Reviews of Green for Life

Book Review: Great read, interesting info, incomplete in parts.
Summary: 3 Stars

I really enjoyed this quick read, especially with my recent health kick. It was a very good story about Victoria and her family, and the journey to health which arrives her at Green Smoothies, and I am most definitely going to try the Green Smoothies. I think what she has done here in terms of her Rosebug study is commendable, and the information about why you should incorporate green smoothies in your diet is tremendous. What I was hoping to get was a more complete comprehensive picture - she gives some recipes, and to my surprise, lettuce plays a huge part as a primary green in most of her recipes, with a huge selection of fruits to complete the picture. I did not think lettuce ranked that high in the nutrition factors among other green leafy vegetables but upon research, I see that indeed Romaine lettuce has amazing nutritional values. However my real regret was lack of a more complete suggestion in terms of a daily diet with green smoothies - she mentions that it should accompany a raw diet. I had hoped for a bit more, but I still got quite a bit out of this very good read and I think you would too.

Book Review: Green smoothies are great.
Summary: 5 Stars

I've been doing a lot of research online on how to incorporate more greens into my diet. I have to say at first it was very hard. I had not been juicing or eating raw foods which kind of made it difficult for me. I did start a cleanse and incorporated the green smoothies. I'm amazed by my results. I've lost 10 lbs. and I'm only 3 weeks into the 30 day challenge. The results vary for each individual. I've just noticed I don't feel as tired. I don't eat as much. When I workout I have more stamina. Issues that I've had with my skin have been clearing. My hair is thicker and has grown a bit and it feels stronger. My facial complexion has cleared up. Also I've had asthma since I was 10 and I haven't had to use my inhaler since I've been doing the green smoothies. There are so many wonderful things that I've been experiencing. There's no way I'm going to stop now. I suggest to do research and try this out. If you find that it doesn't work for you maybe something will. I've tried a lot of different methods and I've never really been able to get myself to want to eat vegetables. So far this has worked.

Book Review: A clear inspiration and great resource to readers who desire to lead healthier lives
Summary: 5 Stars

"Green For Life" is a revolutionary but simple idea whose time is come. Raw foods enthusiast author Victoria Boutenko has compared a standard American diet with the diet of wild chimpanzees and discovered, guess what, an outstanding difference is the percentage of greens and blossoms that are eaten by wild chimps. Her conclusion is that even raw foods consumers need to include substantially more greens in their diet. Her suggested series of 23 green smoothie recipes (containing ingredients such as kale, avocado, parsley, garlic, or strawberries, bananas, romaine and water), are easy to make and tasty to drink. The many benefits of greens consumption are clearly outlined, and by blending the greens, all the nutrients can be absorbed more easily. "Green for Life" is filled with testimonials and is a finalist in the Health/Medicine/Nutrition category of the 2006 Independent Book Publisher Awards. It is a clear inspiration and great resource to readers who desire to lead healthier lives, and a welcome addition to personal reference collections for the health-conscious consumer.

Book Review: Sincere but not scholarly
Summary: 2 Stars

Boutenko is earnest and enthusiastic, and I find her writing sytle and personal story endearing and probably somewhat enlightening too. She has certainly gotten my attention.

However, I remain skeptical of many of her claims, and I desire something that is a bit more cautious and scientific in its evaluation of raw foodism. She might be right, but she needs to get some more scientific evidence on her side and let go of some of the almost-dogma. She is almost _too_ enthusiastic, and I would find her claims more legitimate if she also weighed in on what is not known or what is a possible drawback to raw foodsim. Calling it a cure-all is a little over the top. In her defense, though, I think she does do her best to attain legitimacy--I would just like to see some more of it outside the enthusiastic world of raw foodists. (Needless to say, "healing" and "powers" is not of my personal language.)

Read it though, if you're interested. Its a good jumping off point and, I must say, green smoothies are pretty tasty! (And healthy!) I'm happy to know about them now.

Book Review: Inspirational, thought-provoking
Summary: 5 Stars

I've tried fasting, vegetarianism (uneducated), food combining, Nutrisystem, Liver Cleansing diet, detox diets, the Zone, Atkins, 20:20 at the Pro Club, NHE, Paleo, numerous supplements (legal and not), etc. They all left something to be desired in the way I FELT after a couple of weeks, even if they resulted in fat loss. Plus, I never saw permanent relief from my long list of annoying complaints. I'd get colds just as easily, or still be chronically stiff, etc.
This book helped me make some new connections between the info I gleaned from my other efforts, and offered me a new avenue to explore. I was sorry to finish reading it. I don't know how scientifically sound it is, but even the scientifically-sound diets I've tried were disappointing so I'm resorting to experimentation. I've had green smooties for 2+ weeks, and internally I feel clean and clear. Being hypothyroid and hypoglycemic, I was really scared of the high carb count, but so far I'm ok.
Note that it's not really a how-to book, but helps you decide the how-to for yourself.
