Book Reviews of Grimoire of the Necronomicon (Necronomicon Series)Book Review: No, no, no and NO! Terrible! Summary: 1 Stars
I don't even know where to begin when it comes to expressing my disdain towards this so-called 'Grimoire of the Necronomicon.'
Personally, I should have known better. I should have known that Donald Tyson would've taken something interesting, dark, eccentric and turn it into this soft, Christianized, fluffy garbage. He completely strips the Lovecraftian Mythos of all their terror-inspiring potency. Donald Tyson did the same exact thing with Enochian Magick. Instead of just giving us the 'raw facts and data', he loves to give us his own, personal, right-hand path version. And I find this to be unforgivable - especially since he decided to lay his amateur hands on the lore of the Necronomicon.
Now I realize that the Lovecraftian Mythos and the Necronomicon as well are mostly-fiction (somewhat based on actual Sumerian Mythology.) I realize that it's not 'real', in the truest sense of the word. However, some of us are a bit obsessed with this demented lore, and we see potential in it - the potential to be turned into a working, practical system of Occultism. Apparently, Donald Tyson saw the same potential - but he also felt the need to completely white-wash the Mythos with his oh-so-typical, Golden-Dawn-esque propaganda.
He completely ignores the REAL nature of the Ancient Ones. They are the malevolent, awe-inspiring, wretched spawns of a demented imagination; that is the APPEAL! The Ancient Ones are something 'other', something 'alien'. And yet Tyson tries to 'familiarize' them with the typical Planetary Gods - which I have no problem with in and of itself; obviously, Lovecraft does not give us enough information to create a working system. However, the way in which Tyson goes about doing this is inexcusable.
He turns the Lovecraftian Mythos into a type of 'Gnosticism'. He proclaims that the Ancient Ones don't REALLY want to destroy the human race. He tells us that they aren't REALLY forces of hideous destruction, no. Rather, this is the way we 'see' them - with our flawed, human perception. According to this idiot, what the Ancient Ones really want is to 'SAVE US!' ..... (don't pass out in laughter yet, read on.) Yep, that's right, Cthulhu and Yog-Sothoth aren't the abominable alien forces that we thought they were after all! These forces desire for us to 'rise above' our 'gross, material and worldly nature' - so that we may restore the world to it's original more 'spiritual' state of being.
Christianity anyone? Right-hand path Mythos, anyone? And even Tyson himself says that the Lovecraftian Mythos are very similar to Gnosticism. Not really, sir, only in your cultish mind.
So there you go. In about 200 pages of pure, unashamed nonsense, Donald Tyson manages to take some of the darkest and most interesting creatures of mythology and reduce them to nothing more than a rehashed version of 'Jesus'. He completely destroys all that we admire about Lovecraft and his creations; he misses the point, big time!
No, Mr. Tyson, no, no and no again. Keep your ignorant little hands AWAY from the Lovecraftian Mythos and stick to what you know. Go do a Banishing Ritual or Summon your HGA - but please stay away from the Necronomicon. You're not worthy of it. Your 'heaven-seeking', right-hand path ideology isn't deserving of interaction with the lore of the Ancient Ones. You've done us all a horrible disservice by writing this terrible tome of white-washed garbage. The two paths that you try to combine into 'one' - they just don't fit together. And you should have known better. (and this is all from the author who gave us a new, wonderful edition of the "Three Books of Occult Philosophy"!) Yet his work on the Necronomicion, in my opinion, is a complete and horrible failure, from all sides.
Folks, leave this one on the shelves. Don't be as dumb as I was. Here's a suggestion - there's an organization called the 'Cult of Cthulhu', check them out. They have some very interesting material, and unlike this book, they are genuine to the Mythos.
Lovecraft would be turning over in his grave if he could see what Tyson tried to reduce his creation to. Shame on you man, shame on you!
Summary of Grimoire of the Necronomicon (Necronomicon Series)On the heels of his widely successful trilogy of works honoring H. P. Lovecraft, Donald Tyson now unveils a true grimoire of ritual magic inspired by the Cthulhu Mythos. The Grimoire of the Necronomicon is a practical system of ritual magic based on Lovecraft's mythology of the alien gods known as the Old Ones.
Fans of Lovecraft now have the opportunity to reliably and safely get in touch with the Old Ones and draw upon their power for spiritual and material advancement. Tyson expands upon the Old Ones' mythology and reintroduces these "monsters" in a new, magical context?explaining their true purpose for our planet. As a disciple, you choose one of the seven lords as a spiritual mentor, who will guide you toward personal transformation.
Grimoire of the Necronomicon features ritual forms and invocations for the daily and yearly rites of the Old Ones, individual rituals devoted to each of the seven major figures of the mythos, and most importantly, a grand ritual for personal attainment. The daily rituals provide an excellent system of esoteric training for individual practitioners. This grimoire also provides structure for an esoteric society?Order of the Old Ones?devoted to the group practice of this unique system of magic.
