Book Reviews of Grimspace (Sirantha Jax, Book 1)Book Review: A Must Read for Sci Fi Fans! (A Grade) Summary: 5 Stars
Ann Aguirre has taken a book like Grimspace and made it a masterpiece of Sci-fi literature. If you are a fan of space travel, Star Wars like action and a heroine who is very original and simply an amazing character overall, I urge you to pick up Grimspace. It might just be one of the best reads of 2008 and the character for Jax, Aguirre's heroine will be talked about for a long time.
Sirantha Jax has a special gene that lets her jump thought space and time. The first page introduces us to her as she is in jail responsible for killing her captain and all the passengers on her ship. She has no clue what has happened and thinks she has no way out and will probably be dead in a few days.
But a savior comes to her. His name is March and he needs her help. She has no other option and goes off with him even though he may want to kill her after he is done with her. Jax is now on another perilous journey where she is to out of the loop, on the run from the law and no one to trust. As she jumps, she puts her total trust in March who is not what he seems.
Linnea Sinclair fans will also want to jump on the Ann Aguirre bandwagon. And if you have read Sinclair's books in the past, well you know what Aguirre's Grimspace will be like. It is everything you want in a book in general. I found myself on the edge of my seat wondering if Jax will come out alive. Plus, there is a nice romance between her and March that shouldn't disappoint.
This is the first book in this new on-going series. Hands down a most excellent book and once of the best for the year 2008.
Welcome to a new author who has written an edgy and exciting space travel book, and of course a great unfinished romance.

Book Review: Sirantha Jax likes Sirantha Jax Summary: 1 Stars
Sirantha Jax is in love with the sound of her own name, repeating it over and over again, while narrating her angry bumbling story in an obnoxious first-person present-tense style. Beyond the main character's narcissism, she's an arrogant, mean, foul-mouthed, small-minded, jerk, truly one of the most unlikable main characters I've encountered in quite some time. I imagine she's supposed to come off as headstrong and self-confident, but she's dumb and angry, not a good combination.
Other characters include March, a psionic peeping tom; Dina, the token minority, complete with bad attitude and short-sightedness; Saul, the near non-entity doctor; and Loras, a useless waste of space. There isn't a single person in this book who is likable in any way that has any significance in the story.
As for the story itself, there's not much to it either. There are women who have some gene, allowing them to navigate hyperspace. No explanation as to why seems to come up, it just is. Men are pilots. A lot of sex takes place between them. That's the way it is, until the women fizzle out and die in jump. Okay. The rest involves Sirantha Jax and the above mentioned characters attempting to start their own stable of Special Women Who Have Some Gene, in order to break up an interstellar monopoly on jump travel. Add to that swearing, petty meanness, Sirantha Jax, poor descriptions, a deceptively good ship disguised as a beater, Sirantha Jax, a universe that doesn't add up to something capable of functioning, frog babies, Sirantha Jax, and Sirantha Jax, you're left with a nasty taste in your mouth. It would have been best if Sirantha Jax just stayed in the loonie bin to save the world at large from Sirantha Jax.
Book Review: Ann Aguirre Rocks!! Summary: 5 Stars
Wow! I just finished Grimspace by the fabulous Ann Aguirre. Go out and get this book immediately, you will thank me for it. When I started this tale, I knew that it was going to be good right from the start. What I didn't know was that I would be reminded of another tale in space that I loved with all my heart; Firefly. While Ms. Aguirre's world has alien races, unlike Mr. Joss Whedon's Verse, it has the same emotion. I laughed, cried, and cheered over the happenings of Sirantha Jax, March, Dina, and Doc.
We meet Jax as she likes to be called at a low point in her life. She is the only survivor of a horrible crash. She is a jumper, a rare person with the J-gene that enables her to jump through grimspace using beacons to navigate over great distances, which reminds me of Babylon 5 now that I think of it. Jax works for a huge corporation, Farwan, which has the monopoly on jump travel. They have an agenda; to blame the crash on Jax and make her believe it. But freedom comes in the form of a very tough guy named March. Jax leaps at the chance to escape even though she isn't sure that the people who rescued her are necessarily the good guys.
What follows is a journey through space as well as a journey through Jax's soul. I will not say anymore because this tale deserves to be experienced firsthand. While it is obvious that this is the start of a series (thank goodness), the ending is extremely satisfying. Fortunately, the wait won't be too long as Wanderlust is slated for later this year. Brava, Ms. Aguirre, you have put a smile on my face and made me miss Mal, Zoe, Kaylee, Wash, Jayne, River, Inarra, and Simon just a little bit less.

Book Review: More of a SciFi Watcher than a SciFi Reader Summary: 5 Stars
I like SciFi. I really, really like it. Reading it? Eh, depends. I do love Fantasy, Urban Fantasy, cozy mysteries, and really, just across the board when it comes to what I will read. Science Fiction is something I generally WATCH rather than read, I am not sure why, but when it comes to the written form I have a harder time getting in to it but put it on the screen I am hooked! I am a huge fan of Firefly/Serenity, Star Trek, Stargate Franchise and many others.
I came across a copy of Grimspace and thought what the heck? Might as well give it a shot. I am so glad I did! From page one, I was sucked in and the story refused to let me go! Sirantha Jax is a force to be reckoned with a very broken, yet solid female lead and her uniqueness as a Jumper and her history made her a very edgy, yet likable character. March, (a Psi) her pilot and lover, is another broken but very solid character. The dynamics of their relationship and adventures is one of which, as a reader, you hope and need them to succeed. I find that as complicated as it is, it's real and they need each other. Hell, I need March and Jax to succeed!
The Universe that Aguirre creates is amazing. The characters are all outstanding. I love Dina, Doc, and Velith (who although he appears near the end, is one of my favorite key characters in the sequels).
I am currently on the third book, Doubleblind, after finishing Grimspace and Wanderlust (#2) and Jax is staring at me from the cover of Killbox (#4) giving me the look that I better hurry up and read as she has more to tell me. Sigh. I have hooked my coworker on this series. I hope more fall in love with the Jax/March and their Universe.
Book Review: grand space opera Summary: 5 Stars
Thanks to being born with the J-gene Sirantha Jax is able to navigate through GRIMSPACE. Her skill makes her valuable as she can lead a ship through a shortcut bend in space though it comes at a cost, reducing her lifespan expectancy. On her last mission, Jax navigated the Saragasso carrying Conglomerate delegates to a summit on Matins IV. She has no memory of what went wrong, but everyone else on board died in a crash. Jax is arrested and placed in a chamber where she is tortured and drugged by doctors who demand she confess that she caused the crash.
March enters her cell and helps Jax escape. He and other interested parties want to know how she is able to "jump" like she does. They land on Lachion where she meets the people who set the wheels in motion to free her. They want her and March to go to ten worlds to find missing humans and others who can navigate Grimspace like she can. They hope to form an academy to teach them how to do so and break the interstellar monopoly of the Conglomerate. The Corps wants Jax back under their control and have sent her picture everywhere with the caption she is dangerous to every Conglomerate world. Hundreds of bounty hunters taste the reward of bringing her in dead or preferably alive.
This is a grand space opera in the tradition of Star Wars with a romantic subplot that adds spice to the fast-paced, character-driven story line. Readers take a glorious roller coaster ride around the Aguirre galaxy filled with alien species on worlds that seem real due to the vivid descriptions. However, with all that going for it, GRIMSPACE belongs to the kick butt heroine.
