Book Reviews of Grimspace (Sirantha Jax, Book 1)

Book Review: 4 stars
Summary: 4 Stars

Thanks to carrying a rare J-gene, Sirantha Jax has the ability to pilot ships through grimspace, an essential and valuable talent in the days of space travel. However, it only takes one failure and being the only one to survive it to land her in jail, subjected to torture on multiple levels. Her ticket out comes when an idealistic group busts her free and she finds herself pressed into service for them. Yet, gradually, Jax finds her place among the rag-tag family, even discovering love. There is risk, though. With each jump, she edges closer to burning out, to dying. Jax has to make some tough choices about her future, ones that will affect more than her for the first time in her life.

**** Fans of Anne McCaffrey's space sagas, or to some extent, her Crystal Singer books, will want this as part of their library. The world-building process has meticulously created a plausible galaxy that explains itself as it goes along. Discovering more about the ensemble cast that Jax is the lead player for should prove fascinating, especially with regards to the enigmatic Doc. ****

Book Review: Grimspace rocked my inner sci-fi, geek world!
Summary: 5 Stars

I was challenged by a fellow friendly blogger to read Ann Aguirre's Grimspace. I'm ever so glad I succumbed to the "double dog dare" pressure to read this book.

This book rocked my inner sci-fi, geek world! Tolkien who?! This book was an adventure into the world of Grimspace and I didn't want to come back. Each sentence was well thought out and gripping, drawing me deeper into Ann Aguirre's intergalactic universe.

What really stood out for me was the ability of Ann Aguirre to maintain such a thrilling intensity. I felt so much apart of the action that I had to stop and `take a knee' in order to pace myself lest my heart give out before the end. It's been some time since I've just read a book that was fun, no, scratch that, exhilarating! It's not often that as a reader I feel so connected to the physicality of the action in a book. I felt that I had hopped a ride on Jax's ship and was a part of the team. If there is one author who makes you want to name your first-born Jax, or call out March in the heat of the moment, it's Ann Aguirre.

Run people don't walk to get this deliciousness!

Book Review: Fast-Paced Science Fiction
Summary: 4 Stars

Sirantha Jax has a rare gene that gives her the ability to navigate ships through grimspace. After a tragic crash that kills everyone on board but Jax, she ends up imprisoned and tortured. But when a stranger shows up to rescue her, his motives are not selfless. Her rescuer needs Jax to help navigate his ship with a mission, breaking the monopoly on travel through space.

Grimspace combines action, wit, and romance, set in a distant futuristic setting. Written in present tense and first person, the style wasn't one that I was used to. But I quickly discovered that the present tense gave the narrative added suspense. Jax is a very complex character, having gone through extreme heartache and loss. Part of her wants to live a normal life away from the dangers of "jumping," but the other part would never be content with a mundane life. Jax is on the run from the authorities, so expect plenty of adventure with even a few surprises along the way. The ending has a great twist, and would make for a fun, yet dark, scifi film as well.

Book Review: Loved This Book!
Summary: 4 Stars

4.25 stars. This is a new favorite series of mine. What I loved about this book (and the series so far), is that it is creative in terms of the struggle the characters are facing and how they resolve it. Aguirre introduces a cast of characters who are written with depth. The heroine -- Jax is a complex person. She has flaws (personality wise, emotionally and physically) and her flaws create problems throughout the storyline. But to me, she is written as a real person -- not perfect, not exceptionally beautiful but just struggling through life. I love her introspection, her questioning and critiquing of herself. The other members of her crew are likeable -- and likeable despite the fact that they do not all get along. I really liked the character of Dina. She is not like many characters written in UF/PNR/Fantasy or Sci Fi books that I have read before. Dina's interactions with Jax are funny, Aguirre writes them well. This story is truly creative, beautifully written and just plain funny at parts.

Book Review: Cool Whip science fiction
Summary: 4 Stars

I recently had surgery and found "Grimspace" to be the perfect book to read during recovery. It's easy to read, thanks to lots of action, short chapters, and - for the most part - small words. The main character is unique and the setting is interesting and well thought-out. The book feels very much like something that could be turned into a SciFi channel miniseries, with some tweaking. It's definitely not without flaws. It's a little too lightweight sometimes, there's one character who takes too many pages to be a red shirt but too few to be someone we really care about, and most of the place names sound like the author just took places on Earth and lazily tweaked a syllable here or there.

Now that I think about it, I'd call "Grimspace" the Cool Whip of science fiction. It's synthetic, it's sweet, and it's easy to eat. But it doesn't stick with you very long, and it's unsophisticated. For me, it was the perfect way to pass the time during surgery rehab.
