Book Reviews of Grimspace (Sirantha Jax, Book 1)Book Review: Tiresome at page 90 Summary: 3 Stars
Almost everyone is unrelievably hostile on sight, despite the fact they NEED a frackin' grimspace jumper. The pilot lands a fatal distance (on a dangerous planet) from their destination, so people die on the way; people who should have known better. And one character, Keri, has a total personality transplant between paragraphs, when I must have blinked.
This book, like a lot of others, postulates a future in which nobody would willingly LIVE; just about everybody, if they were sane, would rather slit their wrists. Do authors think that's the only kind of universe where an adventure story can develop?
I like Sirantha Jax herself, but this kind of universe quickly gets boring. It really does.
Book Review: Surprisingly good... Summary: 5 Stars
When I first picked this book up and read the blurb on the back, I thought, oh wow, that sounds terrible. I put it back and browsed more. For some reason I changed my mind and snagged it again, and I'm glad I did. I've read it four times since then.
Don't let the description kill it for you. This book is surprisingly well-written, and I was on the edge of my seat until I finished it. I agree with others that the ending was abrupt, but by that point, it was needed. The character had been through so much by then that something dramatic needed to happen to offset the "is she ever going to catch a break?" feeling. I absolutely recommend this book!
Book Review: I liked Jax... Summary: 3 Stars
This is the first "out in space" science fiction novel I've ever read, so obviously most of it went completely over my head. But overall I liked it.
Jax was a great female lead. Very spunky and a great voice for the book. I liked her relationship with March and enjoyed her journey.
This part: "I'm the first to test out the ladies bucket and man, I think I have a peegasm when I finally let go, groaning" Literally had me giggling for at least five minutes.
I enjoyed the book. I wouldn't read it again, and it didn't urge me to go out and read everything Ann Aguirre has ever written - but it was enjoyable.
Book Review: a ride to somewhere new Summary: 5 Stars
I picked this book up simply b/c i needed something to read. i typically read k harrison, r cain, i andrews, etc (lkh befor her got all porno-y) and was really surprised. the main character was a tough chick who actually stayed tough instead of wimping out like almost all the other main chick characters in other series
this book also didn't go where i thought it would, which was a nice change. it kinda reminded me of Firefly, but more about a lead female charated looking out for herself. the whole grimspace was a really neat concept.
it was an easy read, but i couldn't put it down.
Book Review: sci-fi book even non sci-fi readers will love Summary: 5 Stars
I'm more of an urban fantasy or just plain fantasy reader myself. I can litterally count how many sci-fi books I've read on one hand (with a digit to spare), but this one was amazing. I loved how easy it is to get caught up in the story and really connect. I'm a picky reader and if I don't feel a connection after a very short while I don't finish the book. Ann Aguirre created engaging characters and an exciting story. I can't wait to read what else she puts out. She's managed to convert a person who's never really felt much of a draw to sci-fi into a (I hope), life long fan.
