Book Reviews of Haggadah for Jews & BuddhistBook Review: The Passover Seder...A "Telling" and Guide For Hosts and Guests Alike Summary: 5 Stars
The Jewish holiday of Passover is just around the corner. Whether you have just been invited to your first 'Seder'(the ceremonious holiday dinner), or you will host your 20th, "Haggadah for Jews and Buddhists: A Passover Ritual" by Elizabeth Pearce-Glassheim is a most enlightening and informative read on the Passover traditions.. Haggadah is 'the Telling' of the story of how the Jews came to celebrate this important holiday. For many centuries, the story of their enslavement and the flight to freedom, 'the Exodus', has been passed down from generation to generation at the Seder table. There are several rituals and prayers repeated, songs sung, and the tasting of certain foods, and the drinking of wine is all symbolic of some part of the story.
Ms. Glassheim takes you through each step of the traditions, some variations, and how to modify to suit your needs(for example what you may serve for vegetarians) and explains the meanings and importance of each. She'll take you back over 2,000 years to the beginning of the traditions, and relates the freedom from suffering aspects to many of the world's different cultures. Her parents gave her an awareness, and interest of Buddhism as she was growing up, and although the two religions have very different 'spiritual' beliefs, their philosophies seem to follow the same path toward peace and harmony. Several examples are given during the 'telling' that point out how the two religions are united in thought, and why this traditionally Jewish festival may have meaning for others as well.
The books is wonderfully thought out and presented. As I mentioned each ritual and symbol is thoroughly discussed, and the words to the songs and prayers are printed for you, both in English and Hebrew. You'll learn why Matzah is served instead of bread, what are the four questions asked every year at the Seder, what the 4 traditional glasses of wine symbolize as well. Even if you have attended or hosted, you may learn something new here. There is even 'a what to serve' section for hosts in the introduction. Looks good, maybe up next will be a cookbook for these culinary delights.
In the film "Fiddler on the Roof", as the Jews were forced to leave their little town, Yenta the Matchmaker says:"Next Year in Jerusalem". That is actually the customary closing of the Seder. I never knew that, till now!
Recommended for Seder hosts and guests alike.
Happy Passover.....Laurie
