Book Review: Strictly for simpletons

This book has so much padding it is untrue. Yes some of the hints are not totally obvious and a couple of them are genuinely useful but in the main it is waffle. I expect, naively perhaps, that publishers require a certain degree of rigor from their authors. In this case that did not happen. The web is awash with claims and counter claims for various products and ways of doing things and that is fair enough. Most of us take advice from the web and if we act upon it at all it is with a certain reserve.
I expect more from books, old fashioned or what? But this book is awash with statements on the following lines "some people say", "it is claimed that" etc etc. In those cases the only thing one can infer is that Haley has not even bothered to check the efficacy of the advice he is expecting other people to pay for, very shabby indeed' and suggests that he actually mined a lot of these hints from the web himself and was too lazy to bother checking them.
The BBC had a series a few years ago called "Trade Secrets" and each week the show would be presented by a different expert from a different field. One week it would be a Hair Dresser, the next a Butler and the following week a Car Mechanic and so on. These people presented ideas and sleight of hand passed down for many years in their respective crafts. They were able to say, "do this and you get this", for much of Haleys hints that is not the case. "Trade Secrets" as released in book form but I don't know whether it is still in print.
When Haley is not peddling old wives tales which he has clearly not tried out himself he is giving advice that is so obvious an eight year old would be embarrassed if his mother came out with any such like in front of his friends. He is only just short of advising his readers to wear warm clothes on a cold day.
Even some of the more genuinely appealing and less obvious "hints" in practice simply don't work. One hint that I thought looked clever and useful in a real world situation turned out to be nonsense. The hint was as follows: to ensure you always have a clean kitchen cloth to hand; tie one onto the drawer in your dishwasher unit when cleaning the dishes. Sounds the business, doesn't it? One problem though, in practice what happens is that this cloth serves as a giant filter which catches every last particle of filth from your dishes, result: your dish cloth is even filthier afterwards than it was before. I found this out by following the hint. Had Haley done the same thing then I am sure he would have experienced the same result. The question is did he even try it out at all? I have my doubts. Whatever the answer the hint is less than worthless. To make matters even more worrying this hint didn't even carry any of Haley's favourite caveats such as, "it is said, some people claim, it is claimed that" etc. So I conclude, god help anyone who tries out any of those hints which Haley qualifies.
If you are savvy enough to make your way to the Amazon book store you are probably way to savvy to need this book.
