Book Reviews of Half-Assed: A Weight-Loss Memoir

Book Review: Mixed thoughts on this one, more of a 2.5
Summary: 3 Stars

I liked and disliked this book at the same time. What I liked about it is that she described some of the feelings behind being fat and told of her experiences with it. What I disliked was that she didn't tell how she did it. If you are going to write a book like this, that is why people buy it. If I had known that part wasn't in it, I wouldn't have bought it. You don't have to pay to hear "eat less, move more." I wanted to hear how much exercise she did, did she count her calories etc.
I also never really connected with the author. Sometimes it felt like now that she was out of the fat club, she made fun of the people still in it or that she lumped them all together in one stereotype.
So reading her story was interesting, but it's not why I bought the book and I felt like they should tell you upfront that the specific way she did it is not in the book so if that is what you are interested in, find another book.

Book Review: Loved it....
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this book on a suggestion by Amazon, and it was right on. I totally connected with the book, and was bummed when I finished it. It was an honest account of a journey many of us have taken, and it was not sugar coated. The humor that was throughout the book was great. It kept me wanting more, and feeling like I was not the only person in the world with these thoughts/feelings. I am on my own journey, and this book really showed me that we all have basically the same obstacles. The difference is how we all handle it. The author is truly honest with herself and her readers, even talking about the secret eating (I too felt if no one saw it, it didn't count), and a lot of other issues. By the end of the book, I felt like a family member watching her grow as a person. I am going to pass this book on, it is too good to keep to myself!

Book Review: A fresh perspective on living a healthier life.
Summary: 5 Stars

I found this memoir to be entertaining and insightful. On a weight loss journey of my own, it is always helpful to find somebody who has been there and achieved success. What I love most about Fulda's personal journey is that from the very beginning, she took responsibility for her own situation. She realized that she was ultimately the person that could fix it, she educated herself, and made good, healthy decisions along the way. She admits her downfalls and has a refreshing self-deprecating humor that feels honest and true. She reminds herself not to "take herself to seriously" which I think we humans need to do more often. I would recommend this book to anybody, not just the overweight population, because it's a story that needs to be told and told again. We can achieve our goals, and we are the only ones that can do so.

Book Review: Refreshingly honest
Summary: 5 Stars

What does it take to lose half your body weight? Lots of time, hard work and willingness. I love that Fulda looked at this endeavor as a project, a hobby of sorts, rather than a do-or-die proposition. Blog readers should be delighted to find the book isn't simply a reprint of the Best of Half of Me. We get lots more insight and background into both the why and the how of this amazing accomplishment.

I'm inspired anew, not because Fulda is half the woman she used to be, but because she is so matter-of-fact about the process. Each and every success in life begins with the first step, and doesn't happen without all the steps following it. This book isn't so much a blueprint of how to lose weight, but a guide to having a good attitude about the process.

Book Review: Disappointing
Summary: 1 Stars

While I give the author major kudos for her accomplishment, this book is a major dud. First, it appears to be adapted from her web site, things are told out of order, and it becomes downright confusing. Second, she just did not come across (in this book) as very likable. Usually I would find myself rooting for the protagonist, but in this case I could not summon up any concern whatsoever about her succeeding or failing. As well, I usually end memoirs wishing I could meet the person, hang out, that I somehow know him/her. In this case, I did not feel like she ever revealed herself, but I would pass on any opportunity to meet. I had high hopes for this book based on the reviews, but it was a disappointment and major waste of money.
