Book Reviews of Handbook to the AfterlifeBook Review: A handy guide for paranormal enthusiasts Summary: 5 Stars
This book was written with the paranormal enthusiast in mind, as well as anyone simply curious about what happens after we die. It draws on the information contained in many hundreds of books on reincarnation research, near-death experiences, hypnotherapy regressions, and channeled accounts of the afterlife. Rather than write in the academic style of earlier works, this one is a simple, Cliff Notes type of summary written in a conversational style.
"Handbook to the Afterlife" has three parts, each devoted to a different aspect of the material. In part I, Jon Klimo covers the range of religious and scientific viewpoints on the afterlife. He talks about his father's confusion during his afterdeath visit (his father was a devout atheist), talks about the types of material used as sources for this book (each of which has its own pitfalls) and gives some samples of the types of material drawn from for the book.
Part II focuses on the afterlife as a kind of continuation of life span development. Many of the channeled books on the afterlife only speak about it as a place. They describe how it looks. Sometimes they talk about what spirits say. At times, they may speak of the life-review process or moving through levels. However, just as there is an ongoing process of lifespan development from birth until death (with different stages and required skills to master depending on whom one reads), this process does not end with death. Instead, the afterlife can be thought of as involving a series of stages, each with its own purpose and accomplishments. These are: recognizing they are dead (harder than you'd think), separating from the body, meeting spirit helpers, moving through levels, reuniting with loved ones, recovering, visiting the living (optional), reviewing and judging the lifetime, doing spiritual work, and (for some) reincarnating. Part II also considers the kind of adjustment problems that can happen (which can help you understand or sort out how best to deal with ghosts) and how (rarely) spirits can cause harm to the living.
Part III of the book changes gears yet again to consider how people can interact with the dead, whether to help a loved one on the other side, deal with a ghost, or simply because you wish to develop your own mediumship abilities. The section on how to move a stuck spirit on to the Light so they can finish their transitions (and not haunt a place) comes out of my own first hand (and sometimes I think too extensive of) experience dealing with ghosts. There are basic tips that can work whether or not you consider yourself to be psychic. It also talks about how you can open yourself up to contract through dreams, meditation, and how to channel or do automatic writing.
Where "Suicide: What Really Happens in the Afterlife" used extensive quotes, this one rarely dips into those waters. It's not for the academic. It leaves behind the typical double talk of those works to provide simply an overview with some notes and a bibliography. "Handbook to the Afterlife" has an extensive index (you can see it for yourself at [...]) to make it easier to use. Paranormal enthusiasts in particular should find it a handy reference guide.
Suicide: What Really Happens in the Afterlife?
Summary of Handbook to the AfterlifeIn Handbook to the Afterlife, two seasoned experts with decades of experience working with channeled material describe the stages that spirits go through, focusing on the details that these accounts have in common. Just as life itself has different stages of growth and development, so most accounts of the afterlife are consistent with the authors? view that dying and rebirth are also continuous processes. Beginning with the moment of death itself, progressing through different transitional stages, and ending with the return of spirits to the physical plane, authors Pamela Heath and Jon Klimo define the purposes and pitfalls of each stage. They look at the kinds of adjustment problems that occur in each phase, and how spirits can be helped to move forward. Questions of pain and emotional state at the time of death, karma, and reincarnation are sensitively addressed. The book includes practical techniques for opening up communication with those who have passed on to the other side. While of interest to anyone seeking a general overview of the subject, Handbook to the Afterlife is particularly useful for those dealing with spirits who have not moved on, such as ghosts.
