Book Reviews of Harbingers: A Repairman Jack Novel (Repairman Jack Novels)

Book Review: One of the series' most engrossing entries
Summary: 5 Stars

Repairman Jack fixes situations for people. A little--okay, a lot--of money buys his dependable services. He works outside the law; he is a man of morals, but he sometimes has to get down and nasty. He has his dark side too. He's not some suave British superspy--he's a New Yorker with a girlfriend (and her child), and a baby on the way. He also has no legal identity, and is in constant threat of danger, but he's still an ordinary guy.

Make that an ordinary guy caught up in an extraordinary situation. For Jack has been drafted into a war between two opposing forces: The Ally, who isn't really our friend, but at least means us no harm, and the Otherness, who isn't really evil, but would gladly destroy us and feed off our suffering. It is an eternal battle, a struggle throughout the centuries. And Jack's role is coming to a head...as he is hired to save the niece of a friend of his, he falls in with a group of soldiers fighting on the side of the Ally. But as events spiral out of control, and as the lives of his loved ones (the few still living) are put in jeopardy, Jack begins to question whose side he should really be on. And all the while, the Adversary is drawing ever closer, feeding off Jack's pain, ready to take the world and make it a living hell...

Let me be frank here: In any other hands, the Repairman Jack series would be laughable. The fact is that F. Paul Wilson is simply a great writer. He's written one of the best horror novels of our time ("The Keep," which also happens to be the first novel featuring the Adversary, although that fact has very little--until recently--to do with this series), and he has crafted some fine medical thrillers (Wilson is a practicing physician). With the Repairman Jack series, he has created an entirely new genre: horror/espionage/fantasy/detective tales that feature one of the most enigmatic and engaging literary heroes of the twentieth (and now twenty-first) century. Jack is a pure and utter delight, and it's a damn shame that his saga only has a few more installments left (for the series IS winding to a close; the tension is mounting, each novel leaving you on the edge of your seat). For those of you who've been around since "The Tomb" (published the year I was born, I believe; sorry to say I wasn't there from the beginning), it's a bittersweet moment. For those of us who've matured with Repairman Jack (his series picked up again in the late nineties) it's something to look forward to, with a little bit of dread. Because I get the feeling that this won't be an entirely happy ending...so hold on to your seats. More to come.

Summary of Harbingers: A Repairman Jack Novel (Repairman Jack Novels)

It starts off so simply: Jack, still feeling down after the tragic events of Infernal, is hanging in Julio's when a regular named Timmy asks him for help. His teenage niece has been missing since this morning; the police say it's too early to worry, but Timmy knows something bad has happened. Jack says he'll put the word out on the street. This innocent request triggers a chain of seemingly coincidental events that lead Jack into the darkest days of his life.

As has become evident in the series, Jack has been singled out, unwillingly, as the champion of one of the two supernatural forces contending for control of all human life on Earth. Neither of these forces are good or evil, just dangerous and amoral. They value and notice individual humans about as much as we do mosquitoes.

Jack is desperate . . . and the last thing you want to do is make Jack desperate. That's when things begin to blow up and people begin to die.

A hang-onto-your-hat-and-heart thriller of triumph and tragedy that barrels along at F. Paul Wilson's trademark breakneck pace.
