Book Review: neither her best nor her worst.....
Summary: 3 Stars
I have read Maron for years now and continue to marvel at how much her storytelling ability varies. The story in this novel is a good one, but the novel itself is not. Maron has way too many characters telling their sides of the story. To me, these multiple viewpoints break up any tension or suspense that I look for in a mystery. These multiple viewpoints also introduce so many sub plots that the main plot is often lost, and the sub plots are never completed, or even tied up loosely. Also, the structure of the book was such that the pace really didn't pick up until about three quarters through the novel.
No building tension + too many subplots+ slow pace= BORING.
Finally, Maron always tends to get on her soapbox about various social issues. In this book the preaching unfortunately takes on a strident, whining tone and becomes intrusive to the story.
Every time I read a Maron book which is mediocre, I swear off her books. Then I relent and pick up another one (actually a friend lends it to me) and it is great. In that reluctant way I've continued to read the series. So, yes, I'll probably give her another chance. But only one more.
Summary of Hard Row
As Judge Deborah Knott presides over a case involving a barroom brawl, it becomes clear that deep resentments over race, class, and illegal immigration are simmering just below the surface in the countryside.
