Book Reviews of Hats & Eyeglasses: A Family Love Affair with GamblingBook Review: Ever Wanted to Tell the Author How You Liked Their Book? I did! Summary: 5 Stars
Hi, there, Martha,
It's ten till 3 on Monday morning. I just finished reading 'Hats and Eyeglasses' in one sitting. Yes, I was already tired. Yes, I have to work in the morning. And yes, I downed too many almonds while I was reading, but oh, boy, I loved your book!
As I read, I wanted to have been part of that family; all those people whose lives wove together to provide this safety net of unconditional love! That kind of support as children produces such confidence, strength, and self- assurance. How vastly different our childhoods were- I felt like a little shadow girl standing nearby, watching as the story unfolds. I was completely drawn in and unwilling to break away from the adventure until it was over.
Boy, oh, boy, oh boy, what you went through during your ill-fated trips to Paradise.........all I can say is we all have our addictions; but by the grace of God you came out on the other side, with family, friends, and sanity intact. Jeez, Martha! Jeez!
Your amazing relationship with your Mother got me right in my Achilles. Her phone call to you in your office was heart-wrenching, but your telling of the day she passed away was too close to home. I'm so sorry for the loss of your Mom (and maybe that sounds strange for being belated) but her wisdom, wit, and love will never leave you.
Your book was so full of heart and generosity; I can't help but think that again comes from being surrounded by so many loving friends and relatives. Thank you for writing this wonderful, tough and tender book. Even if I regret tomorrow the sleep I lost tonight, I never regret a good read. Good night, Martha!
xxoo, M.A.
Summary of Hats & Eyeglasses: A Family Love Affair with GamblingA gloriously written memoir of growing up in a family of hard- core gamblers-Martha Frankel thought the gambling gene had passed her by, until she found herself addicted to online poker and knee-deep in debt.
Most weekends when Martha Frankel was a kid, her mother had a mah-jongg game going in the kitchen with her girlfriends while their husbands were in the living room playing poker. Once Frankel reached adulthood, however, while her cousins were making their way in the world as bookies and drug dealers, gambling didn't much factor into her life.
In the tradition of Five-Finger Discount by Helene Stapinski and Dry by Augusten Burroughs, Hats & Eyeglasses traces Frankel's love affair with poker. It was a passion that bit her in her mid-forties and remained harmless enough when she stuck to real cards. But everything changed one evening in 1998 in Atlantic City, when Frankel overheard one dealer bemoan the fact that his tips that evening were going to be small what with the meager crowd assembled. Another dealer mentioned that everyone must be playing online-"Why leave the house when you can play in your pajamas?" the dealer said. Why indeed? thought Frankel, who couldn't wait to get back to her computer. The next morning she took a deep breath, typed in her credit card number, and entered the world of online gambling. It was the beginning of what one of her uncles called "hats and eyeglasses," a term used to describe those times when you're losing so bad you're drowning (so all one can see is the poker player's hat and eyeglasses floating on the surface of the water). By turns hilarious and heartbreaking, Hats & Eyeglasses is a tale of passion, addiction-and those times in life when we almost lose our shirt.
