Book Reviews of Headache in the Pelvis 5th EditionBook Review: It doesn't work Summary: 1 Stars
I read the book when it was first published and was very excited. I thought that I had found a solution at last. The author clearly has a powerful story as a pelvic pain sufferer himself.
I enrolled in the clinic offered by the author and followed the program for more than a year scrupulously.
For the first few months I thought that I was improving but eventually I came to the hard conclusion that it was probably only a placebo response.
At the end, the protocol did not work at all for me. I kept in touch with the other participants I met at the author's clinic and with some other participants also (altogether 12 people). I am sorry to report that none of us have recovered using the Wise-Anderson protocol. To be fair, one of the participants reported that he is slightly more functional but not pain free. For the other participants, the program made no difference whatsoever. Most of the participants I met at the author's pelvic pain clinic after 2-3 years moved on to different treatments.
I noticed that the vast majority of the positive reviews on Amazon for this book and associated treatment are coming from people that are currently reading the book or have just started the protocol and it may be a bit of wishful thinking. You can talk yourself out of pain for a while but it doesn't last unfortunately.
Book Review: Pain management but no cure. Summary: 2 Stars
After reading the recent reviews I felt that I should speak up too.
The theory exposed in the book is that pelvic pain is created by tension and you can learn to overcome it. For people in pain, it is an appealing message. The reality is much more complex.
My husband read the book and decided to do the Protocol training and I helped with the physical therapy. During the medical examination, Dr.Anderson (one of the co-authors) was very evasive when discussing the protocol which made my husband uneasy.
While the protocol was helpful as pain management tool, it was not a cure. The stretches described in the book aggravated his problem. At first, he thought he was one of the few unlucky patients that did not benefit from the protocol based on the testimonials provided in the book and on Amazon but I truly doubt he is an exception. My husband was diagnosed subsequently as having a nerve adhesion which was the source of pelvic floor spasms.
We are skeptical of the psychological theory. His problem was physical -I reckon a difficult find.
In conclusion, it is an interesting pain management program but don't expect a cure. The book badly lacks references.
Book Review: Practical, Helpful & Easy to Read Summary: 5 Stars
I read this book and found the information in it very practical and helpful. The techniques for relaxation and reducing stress can help not only for pelvic pain but for all physical pain. I initially read it for a good friend of mine who was experiencing pretty severe pelvic pain but actually found it very helpful for my own situation which is 4th stage metastatic breast cancer to the bones. The techniques discussed in this book especially in the section on "Paradoxical Relaxation" allowed me to learn to relax rather than resist the pain and therefore the pain diminished quite rapidly. What a surprise! I am very grateful to the authors for empowering myself and others. By being given some very simple tools we can have control over our lives again from the debilitating effects of chronic pain.
The friend that I initially read the book for went on to take David Wise's clinic and while not completely gone, his pain is greatly reduced and he continues to use the techniques he learned at the clinic to manage his pain. He too is very grateful. I highly recommend this book.
Book Review: This book changed my husband's life Summary: 5 Stars
My husband struggled with chronic pelvic pain for three years and bounced from doctor to doctor before finding this book. The book spoke directly to his symptoms and condition, and he was greatly encouraged just by reading it. He subsequently went to the seminar clinic in California and had a great experience there. Using the tools described in the book and taught in the clinic, he was able to free himself from this distressing condition. Before finding this book, my husband's physical condition and anxiety and depression had taken him into a very dark place. It was upon finding this book and heading in this direction that turned his life around. I recommend this book to anyone suffering from pelvic pain symptoms and any loved ones of those suffering from pelvic pain related symptoms.
Book Review: A life-changing discovery Summary: 5 Stars
If you have been diagnosed with non-specific prostititis or frequent urination that does not respond to medication, YOU MUST get and read this book. This authoritative volume written by a PHD and MD urologist describes the ground-breaking Stanford Medical Center protocol that has successfully treated many men and women who suffer from pelvic pain syndrome that is often misdiagnosed as a disease or dysfunction of the protstate, bladder, or kidneys.
After years of suffering, I am finally receiving treatment that I am confident will deal with the underlying issues that created the symptoms that 3 urologists, hundreds of pills, and countless tests did not properly address.
