Book Reviews of Healing ADD: The Breakthrough Program That Allows You to See and Heal the 6 Types of ADDBook Review: Definitely Helpful-A Must Read Summary: 5 Stars
This book has told me more about myself than any Psychologist, Psychiatrist, family Physician, or anyone else in my life ever has.
I'm 50 years old. And for forty eight of them I have been dealing with untreated ADD.
In the last two years I have been to see a general physician and two psychiatrists for treatment of my ADD.
The first physician took me through a regretful barrage of anti-depressants before trying Adderall after I suffered a near nervous breakdown from the stress of life in a non-stressful life style. When the anti-depressants didn't do the trick, he placed me on Adderall.
Once he started me on Adderall things were going great for me. But then my employer's doctor said I needed to be treated by a psychiatrist, and cleared by the psychiatrist as being safe to perform my employment activities safely.
The first psychiatrist cleared me as being safe, but would only treat me with one medication. That medication wasn't Adderall and it was ineffective. So I had to go find a psychiatrist that would treat me with Adderall. The second psychiatrist is treating me with Adderall, but not in the dose that was originally effective, and refusing to increase the dose.
Healing ADD gave me the knowledge to know I have been dealing with unqualified doctors. None of the doctors I have seen have considered using more than one medication, none of them have mentioned anything about natural supplements, none of them have mentioned anything about cardiovascular exercise, none of them have mentioned anything about altering my diet, none of them have mentioned anything about personal counseling, and none of them have mentioned anything about more than one form of ADD.
After taking the test in Healing ADD, I learned that due to genetics, and probably the effects of a head injury in an auto accident at the age of 18, I am in the higher range of two types of ADD, and the lower range of three other forms of ADD.
Healing ADD taught me various things I could be doing on my own to enhance the effects of the low dose of Adderall the doctor is prescribing me at this time. Things such as natural supplements, dietary changes, and exercise. I have implemented them and I'm seeing improvements.
I still have some of the symptoms of ADD that the Adderall, natural supplements, diet, and exercises aren't overcoming. So although the things that I have learned about in Healing ADD are improving the effects of my present medication, I feel there is still room for improvement. So at this time I'm in search of a psychiatrist that knows there are more than one form of ADD, and more than one way of treating it. And with the knowledge I have gained from Healing ADD, I now feel qualified, to know "when the doctor is qualified," to treat me.
As a footnote, Healing ADD has given me tremendous knowledge about the brain in general, and why people act the way they do. I think ADD is more wide spread that it is thought to be. People just don't know enough about it to detect it in themselves, their children, or their spouses. And because of that lack of knowledge, there are a lot of people that are miserable, without a hint of why, or how to eliminate it. ADD may be why the divorce rate is running at a 50% rate these days. And since it is passed on genetically from one generation to the next, it's only going to get worse if not realized and corrected. I now see symptoms of it in my adult daughter and have ordered her a copy of Healing ADD so she can stop it before it causes her any more difficulties and possibly destroys her marriage.
I consider this a "must read" book for everyone. Especially school teachers, family physicians, clergy members, supervisory personnel, police officers, judges, lawyers, and anyone in the field of administration. It will help you look into the minds of the people you know and deal with on a daily basis, or people you must place judgment upon, and help you understand their actions.
Do yourself, your family members, and everybody around you a favor, "read it." The mind is a terrible thing to waste. Mine was for 48 years. ADD may not yet be curable, but thank God it's treatable. And Healing ADD will let you know which doctors are qualified to treat you or a family member, and which ones aren't.
Summary of Healing ADD: The Breakthrough Program That Allows You to See and Heal the 6 Types of ADDAttention Deficit Disorder (ADD) is a national health crisis that continues to grow?yet it remains one of the most misunderstood and incorrectly treated illnesses today. Now, using breakthrough diagnostic techniques, Dr. Daniel Amen has discovered that there are six distinct types of ADD, each requiring a different treatment. With recommendations for prescription drugs, nutraceutical therapy, cognitive reprogramming, parenting and educational strategies, biofeedback, self-hypnosis and more, Dr. Amen?s revolutionary approach provides a treatment program that can lead sufferers of ADD to a normal, peaceful, and fully functional life. Sufferers from ADD often say, The harder I try, the worse it gets." Dr. Amen tells them, for the first time, how to get well. Hard, visual data make a compelling case for the existence of attention deficit disorder (ADD) in this pioneering work by Daniel G. Amen, M.D. Using a nuclear medicine technique called "single photon emission computed tomography" (SPECT)--a controversial step, according to some of his peers--Dr. Amen scans patients' brains to identify various abnormalities. From more than 8,000 such studies and more than 12,000 patient evaluations, Dr. Amen concludes that six--not the formerly presumed two--different types of ADD exist. This book encompasses the full spectrum of Dr. Amen's work: from symptom identification to clinical evaluation, to diet and medication recommendations, to everyday strategies for living with ADD (whether the reader is a parent of an ADD child, or has been diagnosed with the disease.) No stranger to the skepticism surrounding this topic, Dr. Amen begins with a list of dead-on myths (including "ADD is overdiagnosed") and surprising facts ("Many people with ADD are never hyperactive"). From this intriguing beginning flows a highly readable chapter on the signs and manifestations of ADD in all ages. Dr. Amen's full description of SPECT imaging includes multiple brain scan photos that nicely support his theories. But the most satisfying element of this well-researched presentation occurs in the final half of the book; here, Amen thoroughly explores the biological (diet, exercise, medication), psychological (from personal coaching to psychotherapy), and social support (parenting and school strategies) needed to heal each type of ADD. This book will prove a valuable tool for parents, adult sufferers, and medical professionals seeking practical support for managing this increasingly recognized condition. --Liane Thomas
