Book Reviews of Heart-Shaped BoxBook Review: Supernatural psychological thriller.. Summary: 5 Stars
Other reviewers have given you the story line, so I will let you know, that being a King fan, couldn't wait to read Hill (King's son). Hill dishes up a mixture of strange and familiar to King's fans. A unique enemy evil ghost, demon Freud, returns for what at first seems to be revenge. Can old druggies prevail? Yes, with trust and love ala Koontz. There is the familiar King sense of place and time. Most importantly, there's a furious suspense - on par with the best thrillers, and enough violence to make this the next Tarantino flick. I was up all night, following this journey through hell! Overall, a great horror read.
Book Review: Spectacular debut Summary: 5 Stars
I confess, I was a little leery about picking this up because when you're the son of one of America's greatest living thriller/horror writers...well, it seems inevitable that readers will be disappointed.
That said, Joe Hill is exceptionally talented, and I was completely riveted to this story. Reminiscent of some of King's earlier horror novels, this tale of a malevolent ghost and a washed-up heavy metal singer takes some truly unexpected twists and turns, including one of the most memorable climactic scenes I can remember. Well done! This is truly a debut to remember.
Book Review: Awesome Ghost story Summary: 4 Stars
I found an awesome ghost story. Craddock is such a vindictive ghost. I was holding on trying to figure out who will help them. But there was one thing that bothered me...long about chapter 39 or so the Mustang was hit by Craddock's truck and the airbag was deployed. This was wrong on many levels but the on that hit me was...it's a '65 Mustang that he bought from a roadie. My point in spite of his fixing it up, '65 Mustangs don't have airbags. Generally not a thing you add to a '65 Mustang. Other then that I highly recommend the book, it will keep you on the edge of your seat.
Book Review: A Truly Remarkable Novel Summary: 5 Stars
I don't usually write book reviews. As a writer myself, I try solely to learn something from a book when I read it, and this in my opinion takes away from the possibility of a non prejudicial review. But I'm breaking my promise to myself with HSB. This is BY FAR one of the most well-written, beautifully-written pieces of literary art I've had the pleasure of feasting upon. I cannot say enough good things about this book. A magnificent, read-all-night tale, Joe Hill is a compelling, masterful storyteller, taking you to a place where Stephen King dares not go.
Book Review: Boring Summary: 1 Stars
It took everything I had to get to the end of this book, in spite of one of its good points; which was its relevance to the spooky nuances of the Internet. Entirely cliche and predictable. The behaviors of the characters were enough to make you want to rip out the pages and scratch the surface for more depth, or maybe scratch your eyes out. I have never provided a review for Amazon but feel it is my duty to help others avoid several hours of wasted time. I would recommend that you skip this book and not be drawn in by its only other good point... a catchy title.
