Book Reviews of HeartsickBook Review: I am still reeling from this one! Makes Hannibal Lecter seem like the Easter Bunny! Summary: 5 Stars
Is there a serial killer Hall of Fame? (Shame?) OMG! Gretchen Lowell, is an evil, evil, woman! Detective Archie Sheridan, who worked on these serial killings for 10+ years, is then captured by the killer herself and tortured! And then she lets him go and turns herself in! After spending several years on medical retirement, he's brought back in to help on a new serial case. I couldn't believe he was only addicted to pain killers and tranquilizers! Well, except for HIS SICK ADDICTION TO GRETCHEN! Archie, what is wrong with you???!! This book made me jumpy for days, and all books I've read since, pale in comparison! DON'T READ IT ALONE! This was an excellent storyline. I could not put it down, read it in about 1 1/2 days. The only reason it took me that long was I did have to sleep at some point, albeit, with one eye and one ear open! My usual reading nook backs up to a sliding glass door...not after the first chapter of this book, I had to move! If you like on the edge, scare the pants off you reading, then this book is for you. I couldn't wait to see what would happen in the next book, Sweetheart. Lord, I'm still a little freaked out! LOVE IT!
Book Review: Deadly. Summary: 5 Stars
I had "Heartsick" on my wishlist for months and became "re-aware" of it when I saw Chelsea Cain had written a sequel. I rushed to pick up the paperback, and it was well worth it. For all the pretenders to "Silence of the Lambs" that have arisen, Cain truly captures, with heart-stopping fiction, the pathology of a twisted serial killer.
Caught in her web is detective Archie Sheridan, who is one of the most damaged cops in fictional history. He's seeking out a second serial killer, having spent much of his career in pursuit of Gretchen Lowell, leading the "Beauty Killer Task Force". Captured by Lowell, he nearly died, and there is much of his post-captivity existence that makes you think he'd be better off dead.
The newest killer in his life appears to be much more "ordinary", if there is such a thing, and the pursuit brings back painful memories, as well as involving a local reporter, Susan Ward.
The strange link between Archie and Gretchen fuels a wierd thriller that is hard to put down. You'll want more by Chelsea Cain by the time you have finished.
Book Review: Keep the lights on! Summary: 4 Stars
For lovers of Jonathan Kellerman and equally psychologically creepy thrillers, you'll love Heartsick. Detective Archie Sheridan enters semi-retirement after he becomes serial killer beauty Gretchen Lowell's famed "last victim." Sheridan doesn't escape -- after torturing him for days, Lowell inexplicably lets him go and turns herself in.
The perpetrator of an estimated 200 murders, Lowell is remanded to prison where weekly visits from Sheridan give hint to the twisted, codependent relationship between the two. Sheridan maintains he's trying to close past cases, but there's definitely something more between the two.
Sheridan emerges from retirement when a new serial killer pops onto the scene. Chapters retracing the past with Lowell are interspersed with Sheridan's investigation of the current string of murders. The reader will breathlessly turn page after page as the two cases, seemingly headed in different directions, collide.
Bloody, twisted, horrific and compelling -- don't read this alone at night.
Book Review: Tense and Vivid Summary: 4 Stars
I need to preface this review by saying I don't typically read mystery novels and well, actually, never have read a detective type mystery novel.
I loved this book! I really have nothing to compare it to but I was guessing all sorts of things throughout the reading and was still caught by surprise at the end. The stars in the novel are riveting and picture-esque, as you read you can image each of these characters; detective, reporter, locked up killer, on the big screen. The secondary characters, the detective's partners and wife are developed well for the most part. Some of it did remind me of Silence and the Lambs. There is a little throw out in the book to Silence, so we know Cain knew this comparison was bound to happen.
I do think some of it was a bit formulaic, hence the 4 stars. There were a few parts I easily guessed and picked up on. I really don't want to write much and give anything away, but it's a fast read and will keep you guessing. Next up, the second book in the series!
Book Review: Two Tormented Heroes - One Evil Femme Fatale' Summary: 5 Stars
Chelsea Cain uses her journalistic 3rd person narrative to introduce us to her two damaged storybook heroes - Archie Sheridan and Susan Ward. Archie and Susan are two fascinating individuals. Archie is a gifted Portland Metro cop still trying to recover from a living nightmare that may never end. Susan is a young, talented and tormented, Metro newspaper journalist in search of 'The Big Scoop.' By way of Susan's journalistic investigation of a series of horrific murders of young Portland high school girls, Chelsea Cain takes us on a roller coaster ride through the darkside world of evil and sadistic villiany. This story is a great read. Chelsea Cain provides us an excellent narrative. This story is as dark and foreboding as the Portland early Spring during which this story takes place. Waiting for us at the end of Chelsea's dark roller coaster ride is the well-anticipated return and sequel featuring Chelsea's greatest arch-villianess, fiction's greatest Femme Fatale' -- Gretchen Lowell.
