Book Reviews of Hidden Empire

Book Review: Pandemic in Africa
Summary: 4 Stars

Hidden Empire (2009) is the sequel to Empire. In the previous volume, Reuben was killed by the departmental secretary. Cole escaped from the Pentagon, but was pursued by the enemy. Later, Cole led a reconnaissance against a secret installation and captured the leader of the Progressive insurrection.

Torrent was selected as Vice-President and then was nominated by BOTH parties to run for president. Shortly after the elections, President Nielson resigned and Torrent became President. Nielson was reelected to his old seat in the House.

In this novel, Cecily Malich is the widow of Reuben, with five children to raise. She is continually amazed by how much her children learned from her husband. She is also working part-time as a contract advisor to President Torrent.

Mark, Nick, Lettie, Annie and John Paul are the children of Reuben and Cecily. Mark is the eldest at 13 years of age. Of course, they are very different in many ways, but they have all learned good citizenship by the example of their parents.

Bartholomew Coleman is now a Colonel in the US Army. Cole does special projects for the president.

Averell Torrent is the President of the United States. He is a well known former historian and brilliant professor. He has an obsession with Octavian and the Roman Empire.

Chinma is a young boy in Nigeria. He is the fourth son of the third wife of the aging chief of a small tribe. He isn't very well schooled, but he is an excellent climber of trees.

In this story, three years later, Cole has a meeting in Kiev with Colonel Bohdanovich of the Ukrainian Army. They talk about countering an invasion of the Ukraine by the Russians. Then Cole suggests that Bohdanovich pass on to his contacts in Estonia a subtle way to foil Russian plans to retake their country.

Ide -- Chinma's older brother by his father's first wife -- brings home the news that someone is paying money for white-face monkeys. So Chinma starts catching monkeys. Later, he finds a family of monkeys that seem less active than other monkeys.

Chinma notices a troop of red-bellied guernon monkeys in the same tree. These monkeys are rare and endangered. They are not supposed to live in the area.

When Chinma catches the first monkey, it tries to bite him. Chinma warns Ide, but to no avail. When the monkey bites him, Ide starts sucking the blood.

After catching the rest of the family, Ide has another son drive the truck and asks to be dropped off at the clinic. Chinma rides the truck to the warehouse where the monkeys are sold. Then he then searches for someone to report the red-bellied monkeys. He is given a notepad and a cellphone for his information.

By the time that he is admitted to the clinic, Ide is a very sick man. He dies with blood seeping from the sides of his eyes. Then others at the clinic start to die.

Chinma and his family also get sick. Then the disease spreads to other villages and the nearby town. Many die and Chinma is the only survivor in his family.

Later, Chinma is up a tree when bandits arrive and kill almost everyone else in his tribe. Then Nigerian Army soldiers show up, kill the bandits, bury everyone in a mass grave, and destroy the village. An infant survived, but the general commanding the soldiers shoots him with an automatic weapon.

Chinma gets pictures of the killings and the bodies. He also writes down all his information on the disease and the killings. Then he takes the cellphone and notes to a scientist studying the disease. He is flown out of the country with his information.

Cecily is called in for a meeting with the President. They discuss the medical crisis in Africa. They only know that new disease has killed two people and may spread much further.

Torrent wants to quarantine Africa. He asks her for the optimal way to announce such a quarantine. She advises him to wait and see if the Africans institute their own quarantine.

That evening, Torrent makes a speech on prime time TV and announces a unilateral quarantine of the entire African continent. He also mentions global warming and drastic population reductions. Cecily is very angry with the President for defaming environmentalists. Then the President's chief of staff calls to reassure her that Torrent is going to "clarify" his statements later.

When the news of the massacre reaches America, Torrent discusses the situation with Cole and his other advisors. He decides to send Cole to Africa to defend the Nigerian people from their government. He aslo has Cole promoted to brevet Major General for the mission.

This tale has Chinma living with Cecily and her children. Then people start demonstrating for permission to go to Africa to treat the sick. Mark decides that he wants to go to Africa, hopefully with his mother.

The caretaker mission to Africa cannot provide any cure, but they can give food, water and washings to the sick. Cecily points out to her kids that the Christians were wellknown for the amount of care that they gave during the plagues in ancient Rome. And such care does cut down on the number of fatalities.

This is probably the last novel in this series. Most of the loose ends are cleared up in this volume. Yet there are surely ways of continuing this storyline. Read and enjoy!

Recommended for Card fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of armed combat, medical missions, and personal courage.

Summary of Hidden Empire

The war of words between right and left collapsed into a shooting war, and raged between the high-technology weapons on each side, devastating cities and overrunning the countryside.

At the close of Empire, political scientist and government adviser Averell Torrent had maneuvered himself into the presidency of the United States.  And now that he has complete power at home, he plans to expand American imperial power around the world.

Opportunity comes quickly.  There?s a deadly new plague in Africa, and it is devastating the countryside and cities.  President Torrent declares American solidarity with the victims, but places all of Africa in quarantine until a vaccine is found or the disease burns itself out.  And he sends Captain Bartholomew Coleman, Cole to his friends, to run the relief operations and protect the American scientists working on identifying the virus.  If Cole and his team can avoid dying of the plague, or being cut down by the weapons of fearful African nations, they might do some good.  Or they might be out of the way for good.
