Book Review: A book that could have been written in 70 pages...
Summary: 1 Stars
First... let me express shock that a bulk of you have raved about this book and praise those who have knocked it. This book started out promising, at least the first 100 pages or so, when Hatch Harrison died and was brought back to life. Then the story took a gradual nose dive from then on. It turned out that Hatch was telepathically linked to a serial killer, each being able to see through one another's eyes. The killer spent the next 250 pages only contemplating killing the family of Hatch Harrison, yet he did nothing. The tale seemed to drag on forever to get to the point and Koontz added a number of random and somewhat boring detail that only stripped the book of any possiblity of enjoying it. The plot developed so slowly that I contemplated ripping each page from the novel itself and flushing them down the toilet induvidually. Koontz seemed to have no clear idea where to take "Hideaway" so he diluted it and stretched it so far that it ripped right open before the reader's eyes.
There was no confrontation, until about the last 5 pages, between the two rivals, and even then there was no struggle what-so-ever. We find out that both killer and hero were possessed by angels and demons. Hatch floated with angel wings down to the murderer and hit him once over the head with a crucifix. That was the extent of the final drama that was "Hideaway". The ending was so outlandish that it had me wincing in almost physical pain, not to mention that the novel went nowhere, causing me to wonder what more productive things I could have been doing with my four days, other than reading such a horrible piece of fiction, such as seperately pulling my teeth out of their gums and swallowing them like a packet of hard candy.
I have read about seven of Koontz's novels now and only 3 have I thouroghly enjoyed. I had thought Koontz had a certain flare that most authors don't possess before reading this book. Now I'm starting to question my adoration toward the author. Many of his books I have read have dragged at least to some extent, but never as bad as this one.
My advice: Skip this one and read one of his better works like Watchers, or Demon Seed.
Summary of Hideaway
He was clinically dead after the accident?but was miraculously revived. Now Hatch Harrison and his wife approach each day with a new appreciation for life.
But something has come back with Hatch from the other side. A terrible presence that links his mind to a psychotic's, so that a force of murderous rage courses through him.
