Book Reviews of High Profile (Jesse Stone)

Book Review: Another series writer who suffers without what made him famous
Summary: 3 Stars

There's no way any crime fiction fan suffers in reading a Spenser novel. Along with Hawk, they are two tough dudes and their adventures are exciting and very well-written. But, writers like Parker must tire of the same characters so they invent another who is not nearly as entertaining. Jesse Stone is one, though Parker does score points for concise language and brevity. Not a lot of moralizing, even if we do get to read about spousal issues of Stone and Randall. The plot moves and zips along like all of Parker's books and is entertaining if I constantly asked "where's Spenser?"

Book Review: Really Really Irritating
Summary: 1 Stars

I have never 'read' this author before and my initiation was via an audio book downloaded from my local library service. All I can say is that I am glad I did not pay for the experience. I lasted a total of 9 minutes before the 'he said' 'she said' drove me up the wall. I dare say the writer has never pretended to be a literary giant and perhaps the style of writing is kinder in print but for the listening public it is a kind of 'first reader' retro purgatory. I have read a few of the other reviews and am satisfied that I made the right choice in pipping this one not so much at the post but in the trainers stable.

Book Review: Juvenile Writing Effort
Summary: 1 Stars

I was out of things to listen to on my long commute to work and picked this up in a hurry. Now, I've read quite a few of Parker's other offerings because they usually are quick reads and don't take much concentration to keep on point. But LISTENING to this book was painful. All the dialogue is finished or started with "he said" or "she said." I don't think I realized it when READING his work, mainly because the eye will skip over those things easily. When I was LISTENING to this, it was like nails scraping on a blackboard. It was so completely annoying that I just couldn't get into the story at all!

Book Review: Lame
Summary: 1 Stars

Parker spends way too much time on the ridiculous relationship between Stone and Jenn, and nowhere near enough time on what's supposed to be the actual plot of the book--the murder. Is this a Danielle Steele romance or a murder mystery? It's hard to tell, and the Jenn subplot is ludicrous. And I'm just so sick of Parker's "grown up" ways the characters all seem to be so willing to just accept everyone's faults. And why Stone couldn't have just arrested the guy at the end is beyond me. Do yourself a favor and don't buy this book.

Book Review: Could have been better
Summary: 2 Stars

When I was in school, I was taught to write words that expressed the emotion. I did not make it past the first 3-4 chapters in this book. Even when a character was asking a question, the author insisted on writing, the words, "he said" or "she said". Honestly, when a character is asking a question, it would make more sense for the author to write, "he asked", "she queried", or something similar. He said, she said is simple, elementary school writing. If it hadn't been for this, the book may have kept my attention.
