Book Reviews of Home Machinists Handbook

Book Review: Good beginner's book
Summary: 4 Stars

This is a good book for someone with little or no experience who wants to know what machine shop operations are all about. It gives the real basics of lathe and milling machine operations and explains a few things that other basic texts assume that you know. I would also recommend it for someone who thinks they might want to use a lathe or mill so they get a better understanding of tool set up and operation, and what accessories are needed. It will be especially useful if you don't have access to an expert to answer your questions, or to prevent you from sounding too dumb if asking questions on one of the on-line home shop machinist forums.

Book Review: A Very good reference book.
Summary: 4 Stars

This book contained a lot of info that I already knew and some I didn't. I found this book structured for an easily
reed. There is a huge section on data and charts as all machinist book are, this describes tooling in a very easy way to comprehend. If you were a very beginner and completely new at machining, THIS should be near your toolbox. This book even has some good start up small projects(some of them are tooling)that beginners can use to familiarize them selves with machine use. I believe this book would be good in a vo-tech precision machining course as a student handbook.

Book Review: Excellent guide to a beginning machinist
Summary: 5 Stars

This book is fabulous. It covers everything from how to use a file, to the proper use of various types of punches to lathes and mills. Included are details on the numbering system for metal types, ferrous, and non-ferrous. Guidelines on "feeds" and "speeds" for machining, use of cutting lubricants of many other practical tidbits. It gives formulas for threading several common thread types as well as how to do threading. The book concludes with several nice projects that are easy but useful machinists tools. A must have for the beginning home/hobby or tech school machinist.

Book Review: Good value for money
Summary: 5 Stars

Great book. As a newcomer to lathe and milling operations this one covers the areas of my interest nicely and with easy language that a non-native as myself can understand what's going on. It even has very useful small projects to go. From easy to more complex, so that if you're an old school machinist, even you can get good ideas out of this one. As an European, I would like to see measures in metric. But you can't have everything, can you?

Recommended with warm heart.

Book Review: A very good introduction to machining
Summary: 4 Stars

This is a very good book for someone that wants to start a new hobie. It explains all the basic hand tools, measurement tools and machine tools. It discusses heat treatment and materials in some detail and has a set of little projects in the end that make use of most of the techniques discribed in the book. The most advanced project is a miniature ship's cannon. It is a very good book for total beginners but it would be boring for someone more experienced.
