Book Reviews of Home Machinists Handbook

Book Review: Confused
Summary: 2 Stars

This book is very confusing. The diagrams are often several pages before or after the text that discusses them. The projects are incomplete or downright stupid. (For example, making parallel bars isn't a project, it is a trivial operation that should have been shown in the main test.)

I would suggest anyone interested in a home shop purchase "Machine Shop Essentials: Questions and Answers [Illustrated]" by Marlow, Frank.

Book Review: Wasted my money
Summary: 2 Stars

This book is geared towards an absolute beginner with no knowledge of machining, tools, or measuring. I thought there would be more details on how to use a lathe (i.e. setup, cutting techniques, etc). Just a basic overview of the tools used in machining. The small manual that came with my Sherline lathe was more useful than this. Other reviews on Amazon, led me to believe that this book was better than it really is.

Book Review: Great primer for the novice.
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a concise, quick, easy read for a novice machinist who is considering the purchase of a mini lathe or mini mill. It covers everything needed to obtain a solid foundation of basic machining. In addition to the machines mentioned, it covers hand tools and the different materials commonly used as well as including many frequently needed reference tables.

Highly recommended for the beginner.

Book Review: A perfect introduction to machining
Summary: 5 Stars

If you are interested in traditional machine tools and techniques (as opposed to the modern CNC or computer controlled machining) this book is perfect. It gives you all the basics with plenty of helpful illustrations and doesn't go into excessive detail on obscure topics that only a master machinist would be interested in. The title of the book accurately describes what it is.

Book Review: A truly excellent reference for the novice machinist
Summary: 5 Stars

The Home Machinist's Handbook is a wonderful first book for anyone interested in learning how to create parts in metal at home with small (or large) machine tools. The book covers all of the essentials in a clear readable style and includes plenty of helpful illustrations and photos. I can't recommend this book highly enough if you're just starting out in the hobby.
