Book Review: The magic of honest illusions

In Honest Illusions, we are presented with a family of traveling magicians from New Orleans. Eight year old Roxie Nouvelle travels with her father Max, and her surrogate mother, Lily and their traveling magic act. One day Max meets Luke, a 12 year old pickpocket with quick hands and an abusive homelife. Max takes him in and raises him as his own son. He joins their magic act as well the other family act which involves being a thief.
Roxie and Luke grow up and eventually take a greater role in both acts as Max wants to retire. They even fall in love along the way. This all ends when their past nemesis Sam comes to blackmail Luke with information that would damage his reputation as well as that of the Nouvelles. When Sam was a teenager, he had used and betrayed the Nouvelle family even after they took him in as family just as they had Luke. Luke has no choice but to disappear with no explanation so the only family that loved him would not be destroyed by the blackmail.
Five years pass before Luke comes back to see his family and get the revenge that has been burning inside him for those long years. Things have changed dramatically over the years and Luke is caught off guard by some of them. Somethings have not changed over the years such as his love for Roxie and his true family.
I have to agree with a past reviewer in that the background of their childhood was very detailed and it took up a good part of the book. I would have liked more written about them in the present and how they get their revenge on their childhood nemesis, Sam as well as how they deal with all that has changed over the years. Some of the detailed past was unneccessary for the plot in my opinion. While this was not my favorite book from Nora Roberts it was still a good read and I would recommend it to others.
